Super User ww2farmer Posted March 10, 2017 Super User Posted March 10, 2017 I haven't even gotten the boat out yet. But I am thinking the weekend after daylight savings time begins is when I'll get it out. Â Silver has been ice free for about 2Â weeks, but these little cold snaps with single digit lows and snowy periods between the unusually warm weather have kept me from getting it out. Heck just the other day, all the ponds that were ice free a little while ago had skimmed back over. I am in no big yank, it's only March 9th. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted March 10, 2017 Super User Posted March 10, 2017 Everything froze back over sunday lake Alice had 1.5" of ice at the launch, johnsons creek locked up solid I walked across the thing. Oak was mostly froze except at the mouth of Ontario so I fished that with no luck from the kayak. Checked johnsons on way home found a spot under the bridge with open water but not much and managed to pull a steelhead out of it. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 I am thinking Sunday is the day I get the boat out of storage, cleaned up, and ready to hit the water. Years past I would have been already on the water, but my ambition level is low this spring. Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Gonna try this weekend with the new boat. Honeoye ice free yet? Or Cayuga ? Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 For you upper Niagara guys, what water temp do you start targeting pre-spawn smallies? I was digging through some old photos from last year and my first bass was on April 22 and the water temp was about 42 degrees. Hoping to get out soon, as most of you probably are.. Quote
Justjigger Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I like it in the higher 40s. i start with mister twisters and swim baits too search for them. soon as a hook up with a few i switch to watermelon baby brush hog then i crush early smallies 2 Quote
EBramer32 Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 Anybody know of any ponds around Amherst that the bass are biting Quote
Sean Barbour Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 My first smallie of the year. I caught it in the lower niagara river. I was actually trying to catch a steelhead. So far this spring I have been skunked for steelhead. The first spring I have ever been skunked for steelhead since I started fishing them about 6 years ago. If anybody knows a person or place that will customize a fishing kayak with things like fish finder, cables, transducers, etc please let me know I am not mechanically inclined and don't mind paying for things to be done right. As soon as I find a place to do ii I am buying the kayak. I am hoping that place in oak orchard will match the price I found online but i haven't heard anything back yet. not sure why that pic came up sideways it looked straight on my computer? Â Quote
Hurricane Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Largemouth at one of my local ponds are already on their beds... Crazy.. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted May 2, 2017 Super User Posted May 2, 2017 I had a guy try telling me they are bedding on conesus but I went the next day seen no beds and water was 47*. The quarry's by my house were in the high 60s and 70 in the shallows and they arnt bedding yet either. Jon.P-WNY Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 Hi all, Â I just started fishing this year! I reside in Wheatfield and other than Bond lake I'm not sure where I should check out. Â I went over to the overflow pond at Ellicott creek park and talked to a couple guys there. Seems it's been fished pretty hard, I couldn't get any bites but it's a nice spot! Â Any suggestions on spots around me? I've heard of some ponds in Akron but I'm not exactly sure where. I know holes are trade secret so I understand not wanting to share! Â Thanks for all the info here. Â Jon Quote
Sean Barbour Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Wow not many replies here for the the 2017 bass season so far. I hope people are doing better than me1 this is the worst spring/early summer I can ever remember having. granted I haven't gotten out like i normally do in part because I have been trying to get this fishing kayak set up the way I want it (but there are a lot of other factors). How is everybodies fishing season going? Quote
Jon.P-WNY Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 This is my first year of fishing, so I really don't know what to expect! I've probably caught 15 bass all year fishing once a week since April. I really don't know where to fish, Bonds lake has been tough, seems like they're in the middle of the lake these days. It's still nice to get outside though! Quote
Hurricane Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 Been a great year of Bass fishing.. Â The Niagara River has been very good to me this year.. Cayuga was amazing, and the ponds i fish have been great.. Quote
Sean Barbour Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 I don't know about bond lake the big lake I used to do good in but I got skunked there the last two years. Granted I only tried a couple times a year. I went this past week and the water seemed very cloudy? not sure if that is dying weeds or run off or wind or some combination? I am just used to it being pretty clear. I had my yak out in the middle and your not missing anything lol. Actually it was my first time out with my first fishing yak. Found out that lake is pointless for fishfinders and pedals to shallow to and weedy to use either. It's still nice to get outside though!  I just joined this site last year but it seemed there were way more posts last year. If anybody has a kayak and wants to go out let me know. The larger bodies of water intimidate me so I would rather have some company especially someone who has some confidence where ever we go I had the worst winter/spring trout season of my life which led to an almost non existent spring/early summer bass season so confidence is tick poor right now. I managed to get out 4 times this past week 3 yak trips and one shore trip a total of 22 LMB on my week long staycation. Just wish most of the bass weren't dinks lol. It was good to get the skunk off the yak though and just good to be out fishing regardless!  Quote
fayegarnett Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 is it still possible to catch bass (large or small mouth) in Buffalo right now? Quote
bravo139 Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 I know this thread is a couple of years old, but it came up in a Google search. I will be in Buffalo for a couple of nights next week. I was wondering if there is anywhere to do some shore fishing for bass. I have some free time in the afternoon and evenings.   Any help would be appreciated.   Pete Quote
River Dave Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Hey welcome to Buffalo. Do a little research into the creeks feeding lake Erie around the Hamburg area, like Cattaraugus Creek and 18 Mile Creek. That's a pretty well known Spring hot spot for smallmouth. I havent personally done it in years though so you'll have to figure parking and such and if they are even in there yet (they should be). We used to park by a bridge (paid some old guy $5 to park in his yard) and walked downstream to the mouth. Good luck! Quote
CaptainJPW22 Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 I just want to say thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. So much local info I don't think is available anywhere else online. Hopefully we can bring back the weekly conversations, I was bummed to see the thread die down. Quote
archman Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 Just bringing this back to the top. I am from Ohio and come up to the upper or lower maybe once a month from May until November. Been hammering the smallies. I would love to have a group who can give current river conditions. Nothing is worse than driving 3 hours to find moss or floating grass all over the River. Quote
