For those of you that own home defense shotguns, where do you store them for easy access but out of the reach of children?

Obviously i would like it as close to my side of the bed as possible but I don't want it where my kids can get to it or see it if possible.

My closet is about 7ft from my side of the bed. It is a wide closet with double doors (kind of like french doors). I am considering making some hangers that mount to the wall right above the door on the inside of the closet to keep it out of reach and out of sight.

If anyone has a similar set up or any kind of wall hanger that is safe and easily accessible i would love to see it.

No suggestion on a location, but one thing I would recommend is proper training, handling and breakdown/put back together for the kids. That way they are not scared of it, know the dangers, and know you mean business by telling them to never touch it. If they have exposure to it, it takes away the curiosity of the unknown.

Good luck with a location and let us know what you come up with.

This..............^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Mine are locked up out safely out of my kids reach. But every chance I get I expose my kids to them to take the curiosity away. My 11 year old daughter has shown zero interest in them, but my 6 year old daughter is daddy's little helper come time to clean them, or go out to the farm to shoot. She has shown great attention to detail when cleaning, when it's time to clean the AR's (NY compliant of course), while I clean the bore, chamber, and BCG, she takes care of the lower, buffer, and charging handle...........and I'll be darned it she doesn't get them spotless. When I sit down to reload, she's often right there with me handing me stuff............I often put her in charge of lubing the rifle cartridges before I re-size them and she does a perfect job. When we go out and shoot, she's already gotten bored with her Crossman BB/pellet rifle and her favorite is the 10/22 with a red dot sight on it, she loves to hear those 22 rounds bang the steel plate or break clay pigeons from 20-25 yards away. She's an even bigger brass hound while were shooting than I am, for every hand full of brass she finds, it's treat from the store, like an ice cream cone or something on the way home.

Well said. There is no 100% way to child proof your gun so gun proof your child.

Why would you not want your kids to see your guns? Proper gun safety and education is key when having guns in the house with children. Take a watermelon or cantaloupe out and shoot it with a shotgun and show them how dangerous guns are and explain to them that they are to NEVER touch them without you being present. My son is now 10 and has been around guns his entire life (his go is an LEO) and he will never touch one until I tell him it's time to shoot.

I agree that gun education is a must and both of my kids get plenty of it. I also believe  the out of sight out of mind idea just in case. Keeping them out of reach cant hurt either.

Oh and watermelons are our favorite things to shoot! Love how they explode.

That bed must have been assembled in that closet of a room.  No way he moved that bad boy into there!

If I ever go back to the shotgun for home defense, I will be getting one of these:

That's great until you get the jimmy arms one night and the barrel smacks your wife in the head. An intruder will be the least of your worries.

I have my 12 guage in the bedroom hidden real good. Not loaded.I have the shells hidden in a different place.Still not too sure I could get to it and load it in time if we had an intruder. But I wont keep it loaded with the G - kids around.Even though Ive trained them some on gun safety.

Thought about a gun cabinet but you still have to unlock it in time.

My defense guns are loaded, that's what they are for. Maybe I could load in a hurry but what if my wife was alone and scared to death, I doubt she would be aware enough in that situation. But in saying that I will say that I doubt anyone would get in my house without me being very aware. Even if they had a key the dog would let me know and give me time to get to the hidden gun. My advice is to just keep it out of sight and I also agree that the key for kids is education.

I have a pistol grip home defense shotgun resting horiztonally on hooks in my closet in the rare event ISIS or a zombie shows up.  There are shells in it but there are none in the chamber.  I figured if I need it, I can pump it once to chamber a round.  Its not an expensive gun (less than 300 bucks) and someone could steal it very easily if they broke in, but there's more value to me being accessible than having it stolen.  My nice hunting shotguns and rifles are always in the safe.  I'm not worried about getting to them quickly, I'm worried about someone stealing them!  There is also a 9mm handgun in the night stand at bedside.  Its also loaded but no rounds in the chamber.  I don't have kids so I don't have to worry about that.  My wife knows how to use them if necessary.  If I had children in the house I would probably have to put them in a safe or simply inform the children that they are not to be touched until they were old and responsible enough to do so.

How come you can't put a trigger lock on it or in a safe?  Children can't get into a safe without the key.

You can but kids could find the key or combination. Kids are curious and it's better to train them correct handling than come home to a dead kid and broken trigger lock.

My child isn't big enough to go snooping yet. So. I keep it under the bed in the case, Unloaded with the shells right next to it.

I wish somebody would.
