I don't think that it really matters as long as the split ring is not so thin that it will pull apart. Sometimes the size of the split rings matter on floating/suspending baits since it may affect the buoyancy. But on a sinking bait it should not matter.

Would you use something a little bigger, like a 4 or so, for a 6" bull shad?
