Preytorien Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I recently bought the Vibe Skipjack 90. It's hard to beat the features included for the price. I took it out a couple times for the first time this weekend and while it doesn't explicitly say that it can be stood in, I'm 5'11" / 170lbs and stood in it easily. http://vibekayaks.com/products/vibe-kayaks-skipjack-90-kayak-package?variant=16538692422 The model I got has the "Deluxe Seat" and was $499. You can upgrade the seat for $85 extra but I never had any issues with the basic one. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 14, 2016 Super User Posted March 14, 2016 Welcome aboard! Don't have any experience with a kayak in the $500 range that will allow you to stand other than finding a used model such as the Native Ultimate 12, Wilderness Systems Commander, Ride, Feel Free Mokens and Lures... Preytorian obviously has a positive experience with something that sounds right up your alley and for the right price. Just make sure to figure in a PFD and good paddle -- and ALWAYS -- 100% of the time wear your PFD. Don't risk your young life!! 3 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 14, 2016 Super User Posted March 14, 2016 like darren said, factor in a quality life jacket you'll wear and a paddle. i used to have the sit in ascend fs10 and other than the fact i wanted a sit on top, it was a great kayak for the money. the seat wasn't bad either. if you can look around and wait a bit, check craigslist often and you might run across a good deal on a used one. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 14, 2016 Super User Posted March 14, 2016 Look at used, but get some seat time in if you can. The PFD is a MUST_MUST_MUST have, at any age. There's already been a few fatalities this year. They were down south, so freezing temps wasn't a factor. Not wearing a PFD was. 1 Quote
lmlfishing Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 thank you to every one that helped me! I wont getting close to the water without pfd 1 Quote
Fishinggeek Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 If you are looking to paddle distance and cover a lot of water I would consider the wilderness systems tarpon series. I have the 100 and can easily stand up in it (I weight 145lb). The kayak is light in the water - quick and agile. My buddy has a Jackson Cuda and has a hard time keeping up most days. Quote
Phil_NH Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 I'll echo what others have said, factor in a PFD and Paddle too. Thats like another $200. Do you have a way to transport it too? That can run you some money too. Then your gonna wanna get accessories too and the bill keeps adding up. I just went through this whole process recently and the kayak itself is just one part of what can be a painful purchase, depending on your financial status. that being said, I went with the Ascend FS12T for 599. I've had it out over 10 times and I love it. I can stand when I want to, and I also use it on a river where iIve had to paddle upstream against wind gusts. I can tell you its sturdy and you can get it moving too. Best of luck and enjoy. Quote
GetBent Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Get a 12' kayak so you can grow into it- if you can move it by yourself. Don't be afraid to buy used. Lots of good kayaks out there for sale cause people don't like getting wet while fishing lol anyway always wear life jacket. I am not required to but I still do. Anything can happen while fishing- worrying about swimming is one less thing to do while trying to get help. I was in the coast guard for 10years. Really sad when we find bodies that could have been saved. Families devastated- get a good life jacket that's comfortable and wear it. Quote
