shimmy Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 Hey all, I am in the market for a good heavy flipping jig/heavy crank bait rod. Preferrably one that is regular fast taper and not extra fast taper. Price range $300 ish (give or take). Preferably not rated for under 1 oz. and not over 2 oz. Also, nothing over 7'6 since the vehicles I use are not accommodating over that length. Never bought a heavy rod before, so any feedback would be greatly preferred! I am getting some ideas, but would rather be persuaded by experience of those on the forum. Shimmy Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted March 13, 2016 Super User Posted March 13, 2016 I am not an expert in throwing baits that big, but I wouldn't associate heavy jigs and big crankbaits with the same rod. Quote
Kidflex Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 Take a look at the falcon low rider xd cranker rod. Its made for 10xd's but it'll work for jigs too Quote
shimmy Posted March 13, 2016 Author Posted March 13, 2016 Yeh, it seems that big crankbaits are better for Moderate action, but it seems some like a fast action for heavier cranks. I know that personal preference will play a role in this as well so my question will definitely be subjective. But, wouldn't mind any feedback regardless Quote
LunkerFisher Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 I'd be looking for something along the lines of 7'3"-7'6" with a med fast taper for your heavy flipping. That being said, give it a whirl with the heavy cranks and see if it works for you. Myself, even if the rod worked for both I would be using a different line and reel for each of these techniques, so I would not be using the same setup for heavy jigs and heavy cranks. If you can find a happy medium (6.x:1 speed reel and a 17lb line) that will work there, go for it! Quote

I fish 8lb CXX with 10XD's. You'll be fishing a 25' crank bait that won't get past 18' with 17lb line. It kind of defeats the purpose unless you're fishing shallow lakes and just want a big crank bait. Any line with great abrasion resistance like CXX, Big Game, Iron Silk, etc. and under .12 diameter is going to let you fish the deep divers the way they are supposed to. Rocks won't beat up those lines enough to matter and no bass is breaking line of that diameter on a crank bait rod. Quote
shimmy Posted March 13, 2016 Author Posted March 13, 2016 8lb CXX for 10XDs...you are a brave man... Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 13, 2016 Super User Posted March 13, 2016 The rod your looking for sounds a lot like the St Croix Legend Tournament Bass 7'6" MH power, moderate fast action. Don't let the "MH" power rating fool you, St Croix's often fish a power heavier than their listed ratings. In other words...............a MH St Croix = H power Loomis, Kistler, Fenwick, etc... I had this rod for a couple years, and it was a fine flipping stick, and before I went with custom built rods.........I have often though about going back to this stick as a "do-all" rod for casting heavish baits (like big cranks/a-rigs) and flipping. Scroll down to the P-Line CXX part. 8lb has a 21lb break strength. Pound for pound there isn't much out there lamer than bass on the end of your line, especially largemouth. If the rocks aren't getting it (which they won't) the fish most certainly aren't breaking it. Quote

Was unfamiliar with CXX line, very odd they would label it 8 pound test. when the diameter is that of higher end fluoro like 14 pound. Thanks for the tip. It's cheap, wonder if CXX 8 pound test could handle mammoths in lake baccarac... Quote
