Welcome to the site.  Just a bit of friendly advice; Many of the members here, like myself, have a slightly twisted sense of humor and a question like yours just begs for some twisted answers. My left hand was my first thought.

The tool holder on my boat is made of nylon strapping with loops and is mounted just under the gunnel.

the floor of the boat seems to be the most common. i only really keep needle nose out. so i just lay them by me. or stick them where the seat goes

Hey BD, welcome to the Forums.

Sometimes we purchase items for fishing that we do not use after a few outings, either on a boat or bank fishing.

I had a tool belt for pliers, clippers and scissors that I wore on the boat. Finally stopped wearing it when I realized that I had taken the tools out and threw them on the boat's floor where I could get to them easier.

used to put pliers, clippers and scissors in my tackle box when pond fishing until I realized that I could get to them easier if I kept them in my pant's pocket. Now keep them in tackle box if I wear a swim suit without pockets. But found that after taking them out of tackle box at each stop I threw them on the ground next to the tackle box so I could get to them fast and easy.

So please give some serious thought as to how you would utilize a tool belt as you don't want to complicate things while fishing.

And please go to the introductions section and let us know about you, your experience, where you live, etc. By adding  your geographical location to your avatar we can give you more specific answers to your fishing questions.

Right now all we know is that you were born in 1970 and your initials are BD. Not much to go on to give you helpful input.

I am my own tool holder. I use a scissor clamp to cut line and to remove hooks from fish. I clamp it to my shirt so it is always close. Other tools like hook sharpeners, I leave in a side pocket on my tackle bag.

I've tried several things:

  1. Leaving them on the deck for quick access.
    • We all know how this goes.
  2. Gunwale mounted tool rack.
    • Fly line magnet,
    • will grab a net too.
  3. Built a tool holder for the front butt seat.
    • Better than the gunwale mounted version, but
      • Still a fly line magnet
      • Catches on clothing as I try to get around the seat.
  4. I mounted a multi pocket tool holder to the inside of my port side console.
    • Everything starts the trip here, every time.
    • As I take some tools out (pliers, line cutters) they go on the port console dashboard along with whatever tackle I'm trying to dry out before I put it away.
    • I put it all away at the end of the day.

Normally we have a tool caddy that holds a can drink, and pliers and nail clippers on seat pedestal.  Normally the pliers end up in my back pocket. Its the easiest for me  since they are right there in easy reach for me. I use the sissors on my  lil swiss army knife i always carry for cutting line and such.

It's not elegant, lol, but if your boat has a pedestal seat, cut a hole in the bottom of a plastic coffee can, take the seat off, insert the can onto the pedestal, put the seat back on. The coffee can will sit on the floor below you and can hold a lot of stuff easily accessible.

You can also use the coffee cans, with lids, to keep dry any number of loose objects to put into your storage locker. I keep a roll of toilet paper in one of mine, and another can hold tools, snacks, etc.

That is a great idea!

...it would work with a plastic bucket as well and eliminate worry about rusting.
