Super User everythingthatswims Posted March 11, 2016 Super User Posted March 11, 2016 I'm already seeing buck bass cruising the shallows in ponds around here, been killing them on a wacky rig because it's just so darn fun after a long winter! Already a few crappies on beds, and the bluegill are very active. It won't be long now! 2 Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted March 11, 2016 Super User Posted March 11, 2016 Well, my daughter wants me to take her fishing this weekend, as if I wasn't already excited enough you just added a little fuel to the fire and now I'm like really excited and have to endure the rest of this work day... THANKS A LOT !! LOL !!! 1 Quote
TyF Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 got my first frog fish of the year last night and she went 3 pounds my buddy switched over and caught a 5 pounder right after. nothing on my swim jig or chatterbait.they are definitely moving and thinking about spawning. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 TyF, are you a Hokie? (Location, Blacksburg, VA) I did well this week, caught a couple nothing much. My wife and I are driving out to Powahtan or Amelia today after she finishes off her OT to fish. Stay tuned! Quote
TyF Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 WdyCrankbait, Yep! And I'm loving every second of it. Quote
Brayberry Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I went out in Suffolk all this week. Found lots of cruising fish. Did hit up a smaller 10 acre pond, that had fish on bed. I'm hoping the rain Sunday/Monday doesn't ruin the fishing Quote
68camaro Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I had frustrating weekend only one Friday, none Sat/Sun after 4-5 hrs. I fish small ponds and couldn't believe with weather I didn't get something, weeds are coming back so that really slowed things down. I threw everything except top waters, I thought still too early for that. Couple other anglers caught one or two but they remarked how slow it was and both mentioned the ponds used to be a lot better fishing 3-5 years ago. I met each on separate days and both mentioned how they used to be able to catch 10-15 LMB and now lucky to get a couple. 1 Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted March 14, 2016 Super User Posted March 14, 2016 Went to Anna for a few hours yesterday, the fish are on the main lake channels moving up on the top of the brakes getting ready to make their move, there are some way back in the shallows but the water is heavily stained, big spinnerbaits will get em but it's a slow go. Mid lake areas were where I located most of the fish on the brakes, most were on the tops of the ledges, some were still on the middle to lower portions of the old river channel, primary points did have some activity but not much, secondary points had males chasing some schools of bait, seen a few breaking the surface in some of the better spawning areas. I didn't fish much at all because I really wanted to learn more from my sonars and learn more about how and when and where these bass in this lake migrate, what I did learn is how important structure is to these fish and what kind of structure, here in the next couple of weeks there will be a big change in Anna. Good luck and be safe!!! 2 Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I popped a HUGE quarter lb bass Saturday on a wacky rig! Biggest, fatest, 1/4lb bass that measured less than 12" you every saw! hahah. My wife laughed a lot at me when I pulled him in, my ego took a hit. 3 Quote

Some how fishing always has a way of deflating ones ego...LOL ! Glad to hear you got out and it "sounds" like you enjoyed the day . I took my wife with me too, since I have been doing so poorly on my last several trips to Anna, reason being is that I have dedicated the last couple of seasons to different baits, different techniques, in short I came home empty handed more than I care to admit through this learning curve, the whole point was to broaden my skill sets and be a more diverse angler, instead I ended up with the comment yesterday of "I don't know why you needed all of this stuff since you never catch any fish anyway"...ouch. 2 Quote
Freak78 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 The bite has REALLY picked up here in the Shenandoah valley. Hitting everything from cranks, chatterbaits, soft plastics and even managed a few on topwater. I'm limited to the shore since I don't have my kayak ready yet so all of my catches have been between the shallows and around 5 feet deep. 1 Quote

I have only been hitting Shenandoah lake and the river right now. With the bite the way it's been no reason to try anywhere else for the time being. My time is limited until the days get longer. Thank god for daylight savings time lol! 1 Quote

Bigbarge50 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Been tough way up north around DC ...... last weeks cold front, with the one the week before, has thrown off a lot of smaller waters. Think we are close to some great action.... about a week or two probably. Seems like you guys south are doing great, can not wait for some of that to move up our way soon. 1 Quote
