BassObsessed Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I'm down in Central Florida searching for some big bass that want to play. So far the bite has been slower than the last few times I visited. Iv'e hit one of the Disney lakes for a short guide trip, some lake near the Stick Marsh, Lake Butler and many roadside ponds. Caught bass anywhere from 10 inches to 5lbs and lost a few 4's and one atleast 8. While pitching a Missle Baits D Bomb near a bed at the marshy lake an 8ft gator took it and ran with it hard and fast.As soon as it hit the bottom I felt and heard the drag screaching. For a few seconds I was thinking teen size bass but those hopes changed pretty fast. I worked him for about 5 minutes and eventually it burrowed down and wouldnt budge and we had to break the line.17lb test held up strong wrestling that thing around. At one point we saw the tail and it knew it was a big one. Had a few close encounters with gators bank fishing also. The last two days were out on Toho. Like my previous times out on that lake the results were good. The first day caught a dozen bass and a few gars and missed about as many. They ranged in size from 4 lbs up to the giant that was 10.5 with a 20 inch girth. The second day was cut short due to the 3-4ft waves and wind but still managed to land 8 bass up to 7lbs and a 4-5lb longnose gar. Ive been nonstop on my vacation. The big one of the trip 8 Quote
BassObsessed Posted March 11, 2016 Author Posted March 11, 2016 Thanks. It's something I try to do every winter and make it a point to hit Toho atleast once. Quote

The big one of the trip I see that you were recenlty on lake Butler. I have a couple of friends going down to the Butler Chain next week. How are the conditons on the Chain and what stage are the bass in at Lake Butler? Quote
BassObsessed Posted March 13, 2016 Author Posted March 13, 2016 We stayed in one area on Butler and was fishing in 8-15 fow. Like most big lakes every day is different as far as production. Not exactly sure what stage they are in. Are they going out on there own or with a guide? Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted March 13, 2016 Global Moderator Posted March 13, 2016 Good for you!! Great Job...Those right there are one of the reasons why I love living down here. Curious..what were the predominant baits you used? Mike Quote
BassObsessed Posted March 14, 2016 Author Posted March 14, 2016 Thanks. The giant one and most of the 4-7 lbers were caught on shiners. The others were a mix of worms, swimbaits and squarebills. Quote
Brayberry Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 If I'm not mistake, I fished that same pond on vacation from the 1st picture, just 3 weeks ago. Is that on Palm Pawy in Orlando beside the Comfort Inn? Quote
BassObsessed Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Yes, it was one of many small ponds in the area I stopped at. Did you have any luck there? Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 17, 2016 Super User Posted March 17, 2016 honestly, i think it's the hat!! nice fish man, if only you could have landed that PB gator! 1 Quote

That particular pond, was good for numbers as I caught about 20 a day there, but most were about 1 lb, best one from there went about 3 lbs. I fished across the street at the bigger lake, and only caught 3 but they were better ones going between 3 - 6 lbs. Fished the tiny pond beside it, in front of the other hotel and lost the biggest bass I ever hooked in my life when it snagged me up on the fountain in the middle. Fished down the street, just past that shopping center, and caught about 15 a day there with most going 2 - 4 lbs. Fished the shopping center lake behind the shopping center that one pictured pond is at, and only caught 4 but again 2 - 4 lbs. I stayed at that Comfort Inn, and fished the whole area, all day every day, had a blast Quote
BassObsessed Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 I hope you don't mean the Clarion Inn where you lost the giant one lol. We stayed in that hotel for a few days until we moved to the condo in Davenport. I fished the Clarion ponds a few times and never saw anything but thought there has to be bass in there. The one behind the Kobe steakhouse too. Quote
Brayberry Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Yup, that little pond to the right of the entrance at the Clarion. Pond was maybe 2 aces with a fountain in it an directly across the street from the Kobe Steak House pond. I was throwing a jig, swimming it back, I had already fished the edges, and got nothing, so I took a few cast to the fountain where it was "deep" 6 - 8 feet deep. She about ripped the rod out of my hand, and after I set the hook, I couldn't control her at all, I was just holding on for dear life. She kept trying to jump, but he weight kept her in the water, with only her head getting above the water line. She finally wrapped me up in the pipes going to the fountain. My personaly best was 9 even, and after seeing her, I believe sh was 11 lbs or so 2 Quote
BassObsessed Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 There's some giants in small ponds down there. I should have put more time in the Clarion ones. 1 Quote
Brayberry Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Did you see any gators around? I know we saw a few signs mentioning them Quote
BassObsessed Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 Didn't see any gators there but plenty at other lakes and ponds. Quote

Small ponds are definitely worth trying here in Florida.I caught one of my +10 pounders in a small pond and my better half caught her biggest bass in a very small pond (bass was close to 8 pounds ). 1 Quote
Super User geo g Posted March 19, 2016 Super User Posted March 19, 2016 So far it sounds like a nice trip. Double digits are not that common even in florida. They are there but they didn't get that big being stupid. 2 Quote
