Bought a few of the old model Mojo bass rods the other day from the factory (I live fairly close by, and just "happened" to be driving by). I need some suggestions of reels that would balance well, and then what gear rations I should likely be looking at for the reels. I'd like to keep the reels around or under $150 each. Thanks for your input

Mojo 6'6 Med  Fast Action  (topwater/Jerkbait rod)

Mojo 7' Med Hvy  Fast Action (all-around rod)

Mojo 7'3   Med  Moderate Action (Crankbait Rod)

What's you price point for the reels?

1) 7:1 with braid

2) 6:1 with FC

3) 6 or 5:1 with Mono

Whoops! I had written my price range in, and must've removed it by accident.  Around or under $150 would be nice.

Lew's Speed Spool LFS is pretty good, for $100. Or you could get a Mach1 for the topwater rod.

Lew's Tournament MB Speed Spool Casting Reel -- $140.  Might be an option. I have one. Like it. Comes in different speeds. Only 6.7 oz. Good looker, too

You can get the Lew's tournament pro g, bb1 pro, or superduty for right around 150 if you shop around. Why not 1 of each of those?

I would go with the Lew's Tournament Pro, like others have said, shop around and you can find them for 150.  I have two and they are by far my favorite reels.  I also have a Lew's Tournament MG which is very nice if you dont want to spend the money on the pro, you cant go wrong with Lew's.

Thanks guys. I'll keep my eyes open for Tournament Pro's on sale.

Are you open to round reels?

Josh

I'm fine with round reels in some applications (I've got a few for musky fishing), but I'd much rather stick with low pro reels for bass fishing.

As far as gear ratios for the applications, what do you guys think.

Mojo 6'6 Med  Fast Action  (topwater/Jerkbait rod)

Mojo 7' Med Hvy  Fast Action (all-around rod)

Mojo 7'3   Med  Moderate Action (Crankbait Rod)

Also, do any right hand retrieve guys swap to left hand retrieve for their topwater/jerk rod? I've been toying with the idea but I don't have any left hand reels laying around to see how it'd feel. I feel like I'd have more control with my right arm, especially when it came to topwater.

I would get a 7.1:1 for the topwater, 6,x:1 for the all around setup, and a 5.x:1 for the crankbait setup.

I tried using a left handed baitcaster once and that is it for me, I couldnt reel it in smoothly, and lost fish because of that reason.  Stick with what you know, if you are comfortable using a right handed reel, use a right handed reel.  Why do you want a left handed setup for topwater anyway?

Well, the left handed retrieve probably stems from fishing fairly ambidextrously. I am an avid fly fisherman and retrieve left handed. All my spinning setups are set up for left hand retrieve as well. But with baitcasters, I've always retrieved right handed as it was more comfortable. But like you said, I can see not reeling as smoothly with a left handed reel and it could cost me a few fish.

Let me ask this on top of my previous questions.

If you had to choose between spending ~$150 on a Tournament Pro, $110 (after rebate) on a Revo SX,  or $130 (after rebate) on a Revo STX, which would you pick?

The new 5.2 oz Lew's Team Pro Magnesium lists on TW for $279. But was only around $237 on Amazon -- still too much. So then I applied/ordered the Amazon Visa credit card. That gave an additional big discount and I ended up spending around $145 total which put it below my guilty threshold -- and the new reel showed up on my doorstep in just two days. I wasn't sure it was it at first because the box was so light. It's an option you could look into.

The Magnesium might not be for everyone, but it is ridiculously light and smooth. Almost too smooth. When you reel in a light bait like a weightless senko it's like you're reeling nothing, or like reeling air. Reeling in a fish is also amazingly smooth. And it casts very far. I use it with a light 6'8" medium rod and finesse baits. The whole rig feels like it weighs nothing. Practically spooky. But I love it.

But I also love my Lew Tournament Pro G.  Aluminum is more reassuring.  Solid. You can feel at least something when you reel it in.

If you can find those deals, go for it, that's the best set up right there.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm expecting a visit from the tackle monkey next week.  Two new BB1's & a new Revo STX are on the way.

I suggest lews reels I love them whole heartedly. yeah buying something off the shelf or off tw I'd go with the tourniment mb but you can get on ebay an find the reel a good bit cheaper than tw sales them an as much as I love tw Im a high school angler without a reel job so I have to cut corners as much as posible. with that said I would get on ebay anot try an find you a deal on a BB1 speed spool for the crankbait rod a tourniment lite for the jerk bait rod an honestly probly anougher bb1 for the all purpose rod just because I love fishing with mine so much.
