fishingdanderson Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 This bait is one of my first made from yellow cedar. It is really easy to work. I had used basswood quite a bit and honestly hate it. I think you could say that this wood is probably waterproof without anything on it. There is a lot of waxy oil in the wood. More than red cedar I would say. I smell great after working on some cedar lures for a while too. haha Quote
Fishwhittler Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Very nice! 8-) How deep will that bait dive? Quote
fishingdanderson Posted December 21, 2010 Author Posted December 21, 2010 To the bottom of the 9' pool. lol But that was pre paint and last clear. Now it is frozen over. Quote
fishingdanderson Posted December 22, 2010 Author Posted December 22, 2010 That is a circuit board lip or Micarta or G10 or 11. Quote
chipmunk84 Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 that sure is a great looking plug may i ask where you get the yellow cedar? Quote

fishingdanderson Posted December 24, 2010 Author Posted December 24, 2010 that sure is a great looking plug may i ask where you get the yellow cedar? I got it this summer in Canada from a neighbor of my in-laws. He uses it all the time to fix things around his house which is on the lake. It has so much oil in it he doesn't have a problem much with it rotting. I brought it back from up there. It was basically just boards and chunks of lumber. I was a little surprised when I crossed back into the states but they didn't even ask about it. They gave me a pretty detailed inspection also because I didn't have a written letter from my wife saying that she gave me permission to bring my daughter across the border. Anyway, we made it. lol Quote
Vodkaman Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 The 'decoy daughter ploy', have to remember that one. Dave Quote
BobP Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Nice bait! The thing you have to watch out for with woods containing lots of oil is the oil will migrate through and stain the finish unless you use a solvent based undercoating (aka primer, base coat, whatever you want to cal it). Quote
fishingdanderson Posted December 24, 2010 Author Posted December 24, 2010 Bob P, Will it come through the seal coat that I put on it? I use Etex to seal my baits. Quote
kbkindle Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 As stated in another site i use red and white cedar for my lures. It grows here in my back yard. I have built a lot of furniture out of it , its the only wood i know that you dont have to have kiln dryed to bring the mostiure out of so it dont crack or shrink You can just air dry cedar for about 3 months and its good to go Quote
