Western-Mass-Bass Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 My current boat was a restricted hp set up and frankly..... Shes a barge!!!! Its a 2008 triton ts 17 and has a 2009 merc. 25 elpt 4 stroke on it. I have been considering going up on the outboard because of the waters Im fishing now. I feel Im in the boat pretty good in the boat as far as price goes. But has anyone bought a new one for it rather than used? Id like to go used and was curious if you could give me your thoughts on some reputable re-man marinas here in the northeast? Second, Has anyone gone the backwards way an gone from 4 to 2 a stroke? Im finding some better priceson some 2 smokes out there that are the same year as my 4 stroke Thanks, Lee Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted March 9, 2016 Super User Posted March 9, 2016 You can go new or used, but new motor price is pretty crazy. Your other options would include buying a rebuilt used motor, or just a used motor that came from someone in the same situation as yourself. Honestly if you're going up in HP I don't see anything as backwards even if you're going from 4 stroke to 2. Check dealers around you as almost all of them have used motors. Keep in mind too that if you switch manufactures, you'll have to change control boxes which isn't exactly cheap anymore so that will add some to the price if the motor you're switching to doesn't come with them. 2 Quote

I was in your boat last year, I wanted to upgrade my 98 40hp Merc/force to a 60 4stroke or 75 but I could not find one that I though was a great deal. I looked into new and found them from 6900-8000. Fig I could put that into a newer boat with the engine size I was looking for along with a nicer deck layout. Turns out Cabela's was having a year end sale on 2015 Alumacraft models and they cut me a deal on 2016 Mercury 115hp 4s 1 Quote
carlm01 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 You might be better off looking at a new boat altogether , I Just traded in a 2014 Skorpion w/ a merc 20hp elpt that did about 22mph and the boat was light so you need at least a 50 or 60 to be satisfied and they're not cheap...good luck Quote

I've become a 4 stroke fan, but would consider a newer 2 stroke is something happened to my current motor. Start on Craigslist, check with dealers...there are plenty of good used motors out there...but be ready to buy fast if you find something good...they'll go fast. Quote

You couldn't be any more correct. Gonna be staying with mercury and hope my controls will be the same. I'm thinking they might not be though if I go with a 2 stroke. I only say that because I believe with the oil injected models will require an added cable for the oil feed. But I may be wrong as well. My lil EFI four stroke is a great outboard. But Its older brother I want is d**n pricey. Seems like an average of a 100 dollars per horsepower. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 10, 2016 Super User Posted March 10, 2016 I did just what you want to do. i set a boat up and fished a lake with a 25 hp restriction. The Lowe I bought new and added my used Merc 25. I actually purchased it to replace a 9.9 Merc 4 stroke on a 15 foot PolarKraft. All that changed on the old boat was an adapter on the wiring. Anyway I fish tidal rivers now so I sold the 25 and the other boat and found a 2000 Merc 75 HP used from up in Rhode Island,had it shipped to MD and my dealer installed it on my Lowe, I am a fan of the old 2 strokes they were cheaper to repair and i know how to work on them. Control consist of the control box (the gear shift/throttle) and the cables that run from the control box to the motor. Also some gauges (trim) is specific to the maker. The hose going from the oil reservoir to the motor is not part of the controls, it's just a hose that is routed into the storage much like your gas line. Quote
