RyanDR Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I've looked around a lot but haven't found any definitive answers. I recently got into tying my own hair jigs and plastic skirt jigs. What do you look for when buying jig heads to tie with? Bonus points if you say where you buy them from too. If I had the money I would pour my own heads but not at the moment. Quote
z7master167 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I ordered my football heads from ebay, and get my silicone skirts from fishingskirts.com 1 Quote
Western-Mass-Bass Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Sorry...... But the way this question shows up a bit short on the thread title!!!! footballs for me Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 9, 2016 Super User Posted March 9, 2016 I use Boss heads that I buy from TW..............but I don't "tie"...........I just use a regular ol rubber skirt band/collar, or pre-made skirt. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 9, 2016 Global Moderator Posted March 9, 2016 I pour my own in various different head styles. My favorite to tie on is a brush jig head though, they just always seem easiest to tie. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 9, 2016 Super User Posted March 9, 2016 I too pour my own heads and I tie on a variety of different ones. I think my favorite, which are cold water smallmouth hair jigs that are under 1/4oz, are the ball head and the walleye head. Quote
CJ Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 First off, it all depends on what I want for the presentation. Some heads stand up on the bottom, some don't. Some swim well with the hook always up, some don't. That's just some things to think about. A good jig head that is tying friendly would be the tear drop for hair. I look at the collar on a jig head to make sure I have enough room for tying and I like the way a tear drop tapers down to the collar. Some heads can be tough to tie if it has a small collar and also look at the type of collar or keeper. Some arkie molds have just a ball on the end. This will give you less flair out of the hair when you tighten down on. Just a thought. 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 9, 2016 Super User Posted March 9, 2016 i like to tie on the heads that i'm using most often. Small round jig, arky, brush and football are what i use. siebert outdoors has great products, prices and service. i also got some painted heads from site member @cadman and they were great! skirt materials came from fishingskirts online, cheap and a large selection. Turtle135 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 For me it is all about the hook used. One 3/8th ounce powder painted football head is pretty much just like the next but if it was poured on a hook that I do not like that would be a deal breaker. What I like in a jig seems to be constantly evolving. This is why I do not get into pouring my own as I doubt it would ever be cost efficient buying the molds. My cost per jig is down around a buck each, which works for me. Seibert, Janns Netcraft, Lure Parts Online, Fishing Skirts - I buy different heads from each of them (I am still searching for the perfect swim jig) Quote

Super User OkobojiEagle Posted March 10, 2016 Super User Posted March 10, 2016 I've used many... my current preference is Gopher Tackle's Prowler head (filed on a little) and Brewer's "classic" Spider head. oe 1 Quote
RyneB Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Without a doubt it is the grass/punch head from Siebert. I love the 1/4 oz, I use it for everything. Grass, rock, wood, dragging points etc. 1 Quote
primetime Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 You can find deals on good grass style jigs online, sometimes if you visit company websites they have clearance sales on jigs with skirts for about 1.50 which to me is a steal if they have a good hook...I like the siebert style punch swim heads, I like the straight line tie that the AT Punch Jigs have or the Dandy jigs have etc..You can often call a company and ask if they have any extra seconds or blemishes for sale..You may get lucky and get a lot of say 50 or so for a great price...Try companies like Gambler, Boss, or just go through the link on this page of tackle companies..This time of year they should have a few....V&M hooked me up once.. dopey Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 I tie on many different heads - as I pour my own I can use whatever lead mix or hooks I want. I know Cadman pours and sells, there's a couple of guys over on another board that I know are excellent!!! bugman (he also does spin casting or two cavity silicone molds), grousefly or bobo greybeard on crappie.com. Lots of folks buy from them. Depending on what you want to use for hair there are endless picks. Craft and naturals. Don't use alot of skirts but I know from every board I'm on that fishingskirts.com is always listed. When looking for natural hairs you'll see prices listed but NOT always how big the pieces are - most I've found are only 2x2 not really worth what they want. Look around. Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 I buy mine already made since I get the "friend discount" from a buddy ($2 each). But I can tell you they are do-it molds football and poison tail jigs with mustad "tuna hooks" as I call them. I think they are sold as "flippin hooks"? but can't be sure. They are mustad round bend and very strong. I've only ever rolled the point on one and that was when I was snagged on a steel barge cable and the hook must have been caught in the cable itself. He makes them with tabs from fishingskirts.com and I wire tie them when I get them, using brass wire from hobby lobby. Like already mentioned, the hook and skirts are the only difference between all the small jig pourers' products. Find a head you like and customize the skirt! Quote
"hamma" Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 remember! Massachusetts is a LEAD FREE STATE! I have been searching out ecofriendly jigheads for a while now and have come up short, other than googling lead free jigs. It came up with a guy in minnesota i believe that sells ecofriendy jigheads but not much in the way of ones you can powder coat. The tin/bismuth material he uses melts under the powder coats 350 degree curing temp. So i counted him out as i plan on powder coating for some custom ties. As for head types I like darters, footballs, teardrop, and round with a quality heavy hook for jigheads that i add plastics too, As for rubber skirted jigheads i like arkey, football, and standup. all with a nylon brushguard, and again quality heavy hook Quote
