Because he had the top stats before peyton. Quote
dave Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Not a binding statement but, certainly a convincing argument. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 7, 2016 Author Super User Posted March 7, 2016 Well...Peyton was pretty good... I hope he decides to pursue an even greater leadership role. Peyton Manning is the only person in the world that could be elected to Governor or United States Senator in five different states. Take your pick: CO, LA, MS, IN or TN. Quote

Buckeye Ron Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Peyton has the numbers, can't argue with that. But we all know that numbers are just one part of a complex equation when you start comparing the greatest of all time. I think there are several "greatest" in the past 25-30 years that when the game is on the line any one of them can get the job done. Brady,Manning,Bradshaw,Montana,Favre, all have had the word "greatest" tossed at them at one time or another. That's why I don't buy into anyone being the greatest cause the next greatest is soon to appear on the scene. Every decade or generation sees the next greatest. Again, not taking anything away from Manning because he was a great quarterback. If the only yardstick we use are statistics then he is at the top. If we use statistics and a host of other intangibles then he's one of the greatest. Fun to talk about! 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 8, 2016 Super User Posted March 8, 2016 One of the best to ever play the position for sure. Class act. I can't stand the guy, but I can recognize his greatness. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 8, 2016 Global Moderator Posted March 8, 2016 As a Chiefs fan, I'm glad to see him go. As a human being, I respect the man and the difficult decision he had to make despite the fact I'm sure he wanted to stay and play. A truly amazing player and competitor, and for sure one of the best the sport has ever seen. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 8, 2016 Super User Posted March 8, 2016 To own all those records, and to have a long career you need a good/great offensive line protecting you, and giving you time to pass. You also need receivers who can make the great catches, and do not make a habit of dropping the ball. A good ground game doesn't hurt either. It's not a punt, pass, and kick contest where none of the above factors enter into the equation. You also need a defense that can get the ball back for the offense, while not allowing the opposing offense to stomp all over them. It's kinda like auto racing. The driver is the most visible, and credited member of the team when they are successful. But he/she does not do it on their own. The driver needs good equipment, and a team that can back him up on pit road. 7 hours ago, jbsoonerfan said: One of the best to ever play the position for sure. Class act. Super User fishinfiend Posted March 8, 2016 Super User Posted March 8, 2016 Superb player and quite humble. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching his legacy unfold especially in Indy with Harrison, Wayne, and E. James. 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 8, 2016 Super User Posted March 8, 2016 as a lifer broncos fan, i'm glad he got us to the big dance 2 times and respect his talents. that said, i'm very glad to see him go out on top and allowing the broncos to start back with rebuilding a contending team without him. the guy is a great player no doubt, but football is not a 1 person sport and it takes a village.... i'd love to see him take a front office position in denver and assemble the next super bowl team! Well, I think that depends on how long John intends to be the GM. I think Peyton is ready for that position right now and the Broncos really don't need help there if Elway stays. There are probably at least 20 of the 32 NFL teams that could use the boost that Peyton Manning could bring to the table. 1 Quote

Nice_Bass Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Peyton will be in the booth I would bet. I am not sure he could be in the front office this soon as far as money as well as daily grind he would be put in. A couple years in the booth then maybe the front office. It was for sure time for him to retire however...he was a great player...keyword being was. Quote

Not sure about that... the game is way too different now with the way the offense runs as well as the rule changes. Hell, you put Vick in the Unitas days and I would bet he would be at the top of that list! As much as I dislike the Pats...Brady would/should probably sit at #1 4 minutes ago, roadwarrior said: Well, I REALLY don't think the money comes into play. He will do whatever he WANTS to do. Money comes into play when the owners would have to fork over quite a bit...and there are not many owners out there that listen to their front offices like they should! (Denver a big exception). under the right team it could work...but not many of those out there willing to fork the money over I would bet. Quote

Don't get me wrong love the pats, but Manning sure was fun to watch. A high powered offense sure makes the game fun to watch and in their heyday, they could pass, run, and had a pretty good defense too. Wonder if that type of offense could ever be duplicated again. bassin is addicting Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 class act all the way. but best ever?? it's always a good "argument" for best ever....for anything...running back, hiter, pitcher, etc.. when he played for the Colts if he had had as good as line as Brady, i would suggest he would have accomplished even more. his lines never were exceptional. very rarely did you see him be able to just stand there like Brady has been able to. as for the defense on those Colt's teams....pathetic. go look at their stats. not much of "holding the opponent and getting the ball back" , different story in Denver. but the majority of his time in Indy, the defense was awful. he carried those teams... will miss him for sure. the ESPN 30 on 30 about the Manning family was priceless.
