A friend of mine has decided to try his hand at airbrushing baits. I know nothing about it and he's looking for advice. I've told him trial and error will probably get him to being able to paint basic patterns but he will have to be patient. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You hit the nail on the head - there's no replacement for practice and experience, and it takes time to get them.  If I had any suggestion, it would be to use a good airbrush and compressor.  It makes airbrushing easier and quicker to learn.  Then, peruse some of the airbrushing and bait building sites including this one to see what is possible.
