woodell14 Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Hey everybody, Me and a buddy of mine have recently started fishing a new pond. The bottom is covered in grass but the water is really clear. The biggest bass we have caught out of there was a little over a pound. Could there not be any decent 3-4 pounders in there? Maybe we haven't caught any good ones because it's early in the year? Anybody maybe have an idea why we are only catching little ones? Quote
Fishin Ethan Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I have only caught small bass this year in ponds. I would wait a little longer till the spawn starts and you can start to see bedding bass. I have a pond that has a grassy pond, and when I fish worm I always use a Carolina Rig. Once the spawn-postspawn begins you will either catch big bass or your pond might just be a dud. Quote
RHuff Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I would fish it a season or two before i judge the type of pond it is. Chances are if there are a solid number of bass then there are a few hogs lurking around. I'd say you just haven't tapped into one yet. Quote
Hog Basser Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 It's very likely that if the pond hasn't been managed consistently, you have an overcrowded and stunted bass population. There may still be a few lunkers in there, but it sounds like some of the smaller ones will need to be culled so others have a chance to grow bigger. Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 7, 2016 Super User Posted March 7, 2016 In an overcrowded/stunted, there are ALWAYS a few big fish. You just have to wade through the dinks. Fish what you think are the best areas of the pond, at what you think are the best times, maybe you'll get lucky. Big fish in stunted ponds are wary. Quote
Backwoods bassin Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Keep ripping lips! Your bound to pull out a sleeper some Day if conditions are right. ✊ Quote
Sundance Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I thought the pond behind my house only had small bass until i pulled my pb 8# bass out of it. Try fishin from any stretch of bank that is higher off the water than the rest and fish down through the grass that seems to be the most productive spots for me. Keep tryin there are almost always some big fish. Quote
