Super User kickerfish1 Posted March 7, 2016 Super User Posted March 7, 2016 Wanted to finally update everything with this build. Some of you may recall me asking about a gloss black painted reel seat. After running into some fitment issues with one I ordered due to the size of blank I had to scrap that idea and move on to the standard Fuji seat. Thanks for the help and suggestions to try to locate one though. Anways more on the rod... The wait was finally over for my dedicated jig rod and reel as I was informed by my builder it should be delivered on Saturday. Took a few weeks of planning and sourcing parts to get the things I wanted to do visually and fitment wise. Parts were sourced from Mudhole and Matagi to add further appeal. The blanks was the MHX Hi Mod 7'3 Heavy and the guides are Fuji alconites. Paired with an Exscence DC with a few gold pieces added, this should be a fun rig to use. 10 Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted March 7, 2016 Super User Posted March 7, 2016 That is an absolutely beautiful build! Classy looks and I'll bet she's a KILLER performer! 1 Quote

Classy looks and I'll bet she's a KILLER performer! Thanks for the kind words! I think it will be too. The blank seems to very good for the price. I would probably say it is somewhere in the middle between a budget blank and something high end as the price for the blank was $113. Today was a nice spring day here so I decided to test cast it in the back yard. I tied on a 1/2 oz practice casting plus and was trying to get an idea for how it feels and how it handles. It seemed to have very good feel but I will reserve further comment until I get to try it in a lake setting. On a positive note, the red casting plug seemed to attract the attention of the neighbors yippy dog. Quote

Super User Jrob78 Posted March 8, 2016 Super User Posted March 8, 2016 This is what a custom rod is all about! Did you go with a conventional guide train or something different? 1 Quote

Did you go with a conventional guide train or something different? I did go conventional on the guides. And I need to get some more photos of this posted this weekend when the weather is nice and lighting is better. The guides are quite similar to what you would find on the Kistler Helium 3. I thought about the spiral wrap idea but it wouldn't be ideal for me. Reason being is that when the rod is layed flat on the deck of the boat some of the guides will be facing down. Should the rod get stepped on ever so lightly or should a tackle bag or something accidentally land on it could result in damage or breakage of the guides. Even if the guide cost for one or a few guides is less than $20, the shipping there and back will run me about $50 round trip. I got to test cast a spiral wrapped rod from a local builder a few years back. It was a cool experience for sure but it just wasn't something that I wanted on this rod. The builder is "good people" Made the whole process easy and painless. Was able to turn my ideas into an outstanding finished product. Best part was he could verify fitment and then let me know what was possible and what wasn't. He also provided plenty of photos along the way of what was done but not permanently finished, so if I didn't like it, he could alter it before making it final. 2 hours ago, Paul Roberts said: Ouch! If you want the best and best looking order from a shop called Matagi in Japan. Quote
