I am in the market for a swim jog rod.  Have not really fished with them at all until this year.  Need some suggestions  on rods ....length, action, brand ...line type to match.

Any suggestions on specific rods would be great.  Looking to spend under $150.

Thanks guys

depends on the type of swim jig. hook, cover, etc.

I like a 7'1" H/F or a 7'3" MH/XF for swim jigs. Megabass, Daiwa, and Powell are my preferred rod brands. Line type depends on the type of cover. 30lb braid around grass, 15-17lb fluoro around rocks and wood.

Mainly thinking of fishing around grass.  Have mostly 1/2 oz  jigs I am going to be using.

I have seen a lot of guys saying braided line for grass.  What makes it the go to for this situation?

I agree with the size of rod and the line, that would be my recommendation too.

As for your question about why people use braided line around grass is that it can take more strain when trying to pull a big bass out of cover. It will not stretch, which will give you more leverage on the fish to get it out of the cover, and incase you have to pull in a large pile of grass or moss with the bass, the braid will hold up just fine.

If you're just starting out, use a rod you already have until to totally understand the technique and how you apply it (open water, heavy cover, deep, etc).  Any MH fast action casting rod will work, just keep the line around 15lb (mono/floro) or 30 lb for braid (ballpark).  When using braid, you'll want to use a 15lb floro leader anyways.

Have been looking at different rods last night.  Any thoughts in the dobyns fury rod?

What kind brand of braid are you guys using?

Dobyn's are fine rods.  Also check out the Fenwick Aetos, I believe they are more sensitive than the fury.  Plain power pro is the braid of choice.

My swim jig out fit is a 7 ft MH St. Croix Avid, on a Curado I with 40lb PowerPro braid. This setup launches swimjigs pretty good and has great backbone for when you hook up.

I have been fishing swim jigs around grass a ton the last 2 seasons and have had great success with 14lb FC. 0 break offs and caught many. I can easily see the case for 30lb braid, but I like the invisibility of FC. I dont have the need for 40 or 50lb braid but my cover is moderate. The rod I use is a LTB sweeper spinnerbait rod. It had enough tip to let them really get it good, and plenty back bone to put pressure on if needed. GL

In my case its the location. I fish a couple of times a month out on Lake Okeechobee, and the cover at  some of these locations can be pretty thick. In open water situations, I have been having success with 15lb yozuri on a 7'3" St. Croix LTB MH Fast tip.

You may want to consider dropping down in weight a tad on those swim jigs in a grassy situation. I personally think 1/2 oz on a swim jig is pretty heavy, in vegetation, but then again I am not fishing in your part of the country and don't know the depth's you are dealing with. I like using 1/4 oz swim jigs with a variety of trailers in grass and vegetation and find I don't get hung up nearly as much because and  I can swim the jig easily above and around the grass.

I use braid in grass for two other reasons also. With the thinner diameter, it cuts through the grass easier. Plus, it blends in with the grass very well so I don't worry about the line visibility as much.

I too like the 1/4 - 3/8 swim jigs.  The Terminator swim jigs have a light wire hook and you can get away with lighter line and rod. That's my go to jig.

I run a Duckett Micro Magic 7' H, with 50lb PP. I throw from 1/4oz up to 3/4oz swim jigs on it with no problem. I wouldn't go lighter on the action because I only fish them in slop. A swim jig to me is for places I can't get a spinnerbait or chatterbait without fouling or snagging them.

Fo sho, it really gets in and out of some tight spots easily. It in any weight its the go to for me. So many options with line, jig, trailer, rod, and how you catch fish on it.

Agreed with the ways you can fish it. My biggest producer in and around grass is a 3/4oz Dirty Jigs California in Rainbow, Black & Blue, and Bluegill and I match it with a 6" Mogambo trailer. It bull dozes through grass.
