Guys, here's the report from 3/5 for Chic Lake:

Quote

Chickahominy Lake: Contributed by Captain Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service, (804) 746-2475. On Saturday (3/5/2016) mid day water temperatures in Chickahominy Lake were in the mid to high 40s in the main lake and the major creeks, with slightly lower temperatures up the lake.  The lake level was a few inches above top of the dam. The water was medium brown and slightly cloudy in the central lower lake.  Some blue cats and a few bullheads were still in channels and winter holes, but others had moved onto flats and into creeks.  Cats were hitting live minnows and cut bait.  Crappie action was picking up as loose aggregates migrated into major creeks before the cold front and snow last week, after which most crappies left the creeks.  They should return with warmer days this next week.  Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swimbaits.  Small to medium yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on some main lake flats and in channels and were hitting live minnows, small drop shot baits, and small jigs.  Some bass, pickerel, and bowfin were along drop offs and in the backs of major creeks, while others had moved back to deeper flats in the main lake after the cold front.  When active, bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, stickworms, crankbaits, jerkbaits, and jigs.

I actually went out on 3/9 and the temp was 58-60 degrees, I was pretty surprised by the quick rise in temperature. I appreciate the follow up report.

Chickahominy Lake: Contributed by Captain Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service, (804) 746-2475. On Saturday (3/19/2016) mid day water temperatures in Chickahominy Lake were in the low 60s in the main lake and up the creeks. The lake level was about even with the top of the dam.  The water was light brown and very slightly cloudy in the central lower lake.  Some blue cats and a few bullheads were still in channels and winter holes, but others had moved onto flats and into creeks.  Cats were hitting live minnows and cut bait.  Crappie action was picking up as loose aggregates migrated into major creeks and began assembling in spawning sites.  Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swimbaits.  Small to medium yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on some main lake flats and in channels and on flats in major creeks and were hitting live minnows, small drop shot baits, and small jigs.  Small to medium bluegill and shellcracker were starting to accumulate along some shorelines in major creeks and were hitting small jigs.  Some bass, pickerel, and bowfin were along shorelines, on flats, and along drop offs in the major creeks.  When active, bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, stickworms, crankbaits, jerkbaits, and jigs.

Temp around 64 today at the lake. Crowded since it was so nice. Caught bass, pickerel and a couple of crappie. All in shallow water. Crappie and pickerel caught on minnows and blue jig tube with white tail. Bass caught on black and chartreuse crankbait. One keeper. Just started fishing chickahominy since I got a boat. Looking forward to river and possibly diascund resevoir even though it's electric only.

Hi Shaun, welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the report!

Fished Morris Creek which is near the opening of the chick and had a blast fishing grass lines! Caught them all on crankbaits and chatterbaits, I've caught some of my biggest fish this year on chatterbaits. Might head out there again Friday and maybe hit up the upper Chickahominy river  Thursday.

Haven't tried the river yet but will soon. Going back out Saturday and maybe even Sunday. Water Temps should stay warm it looks like. Hopefully bite will be still good. May have to look at the chatterbaits, haven't tried those. Thanks for the compliment Darren!

I may be too late, but can anyone fill me in on Shad fishing the Chick?  We've been running up to the dam to do so assuming they would behave like James River shad and school at an obstruction, but no luck.

Kirby, have never head of shad fishing on the Chick.

I know it is excellent at Ancarrows.

To make sure your truck and trailer are still there when you return to the ramp you may want to launch from Osborne Landing and motor up the river to Richmond.

Just a suggestion.

Sam - A buddy once told me he saw people catching them up by the dam and it would make sense, but like I said no luck for us.

As far as the James, I actually prefer just fishing from the rocks in Manchester.  And from everything I hear about the shad run there this year, the only people catching them are flyfishing, which I've never learned to do.

Never had trouble with truck or trailer at Ancarrows but that is the worst ramp I've ever used and will never go back there.  Not to mention the level of idiot that uses that ramp.

Went out yesterday to Chick lake after short storms, not much luck. Water temp 61. Guy at bait shop said quite a few crappie caught prior to weather coming in and a guy came in with a 6 and LM. Gonna head back out again today.
