I personally wouldn't throw 9 inch worms for smallmouth. They call them smallmouth for a reason. I fish for them along a great river and lakes and I don't usually throw anything over 6 inches.

I've caught smallies on BIG swimbaits. They'll eat it. Smallmouth LOVE small eels and lampreys so I think a big worm would be good.

I catch lots of 12-15" largemouth on magnum ol monsters, so a 9" worm should be no problem for smallmouth.

I fish a lot of worms. Not many 6" worms. A 6" is tying on a bigger worm for my type of fishing. They work. 9" go for it, try it. Let us know how it works for you. I don't want a whole pack of 9"ers but if I scored two 9" green pumpkin or pumpkinseed ribbon tails I'd try it. Good luck.

The Zoom Mag II is not a very big worm despite it being 9" long. It's pretty thin and a lot of it is tail. I've caught a lot of smallmouth on a Ol' Monster that's probably twice as thick and an inch longer.

Plum apple and black grape are my favorites, even in clear water. Watermelon candy/red with the tip of the tail dipped in chartreuse JJ's is a really good one too.
