dag3220 Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Well I fish both left and right handed reels almost equally the same. I am ambidextrous so using one over the other isn't a big deal. Although lefty feels better when fishing short distance so I don't have to switch hands but if I'm bombing baits switching in the air isn't a issue. But like anything else it's all personal preference. I chose both and makes things easier when finding good deals on reels!!!! 1 Quote
HeavyTwenty Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I like to alternate hands when I'm using lures like the chatterbait. Reeling in the chatterbait on one hand for hours gets it pretty tired. I also prefer to pitch on my left handed reel so I don't have to switch hands. Quote

Lendiesel22 Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Lol, nothing matters but the post season now. A typical choke point for us Quote
PersicoTrotaVA Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 It usually comes down to personal preference but one reason why right handers like a right hand retrieve is because when you are flipping, the retrieve handle doesn't get in the way. I'm a lefty and it always gets in my way when I try to flip but I can't use a left hand retrieve and change hands, its feels very awkward. Quote

Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted March 6, 2016 Super User Posted March 6, 2016 it comes to what hand you use to work the rod with . for me i use my right hand so naturally i use left hand retrieve reels .... Quote
juicebass Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Good topic. When I was about to purchase my first baitcast a few years ago I had this exact same question. I'm right handed and can turns out I can only fish with LH reels. Bait cast and spinning, for one it just feels right. But mostly I need to use a LH model because I get more power in the hook sets. Holding the reel in my strong hand gives me a more powerful hook set and more control over holding the rod. I've tried RH reels and holding the reel in my left hand gives me no power and feels super awkward for hook sets. I can do everything else until that point: (Cast-switch hands, reel) but I lost way too many fish setting the hook horribly because it's too awkward. A lot of the pros you see use RH reels because when they were growning up RH reels were more available and pretty much the only default reel side out there. i would strongly suggest if you are a right handed guy to buy a left reel. (If it feels right!) 1 Quote

However, I have always found this post by George Welcome interesting: Posted August 22 2007 - 10:37 AM Let's get technical, as there are in fact reasons, not just some lame holdover from days past that put the handles where they are. What will move the fish during retrieval is placed to the strong hand! A baitcast is designed to be used as a winch, so it is the reel that retrieves the fish. Hence if you are right handed the handle is in your right hand. A spinning reel is designed to pick up unloaded or loose line, not retrieve the fish. Hence it is the rod that does the retrieval, so it is the rod that is in your strong hand. If you are right handed then the pole goes to the right hand. George Welcome Sebastian Florida If I catch a bass that gets away because my left arm/ or hand is too weak and doesn’t crank hard enough I’m a ***** Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted July 13, 2023 Super User Posted July 13, 2023 I don’t feel right offering an opinion on which hand you crank a reel with. I can do either. I like righty reels. If I have to react quick, I can cast with the left. Like punching or pitching. Quote
Deephaven Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Old thread.... Cast with the arm you want to, reel with the other. Can be different for different baits but that is always the answer. Quote
T2DM Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 I'm a right-handed, but for some reason I'm just not comfortable with right hand reels... 2 Quote
