FrogginOhio Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 i tend to try and use braid on majority of my setups, besides my spinning setup. is this bad? mainly 20lb braid except for my flipping rods. was wanting to know everyone elses opinions on this. thanks! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 2, 2016 Super User Posted March 2, 2016 total preference. I use braid on pretty much everything except one spinning rod that i use for jerk baits and topwater. other than that, i am a straight braid guy. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 2, 2016 Super User Posted March 2, 2016 Up to you, really. I use braid on every setup, but I always tie on a leader of varying poundage, and material. Mostly I tie Yo-Zuri Hybrid from 4-15# test. Also have XPS Florocarbon that I use on occasion. 1 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 2, 2016 Super User Posted March 2, 2016 Its all personal preference, mine is all flouro except topwater and punching. Quote
S. Sass Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 It is up to you really. I use braid on every setup, and I never tie on a leader. I will say I haven't fish deep diving crankbaits hardly at all. Lipless and some up to 5 to 6' deep is about it and I don't fish them much. Just looking to get started doing more of that. So my opinion is sort of biased. Quote
0119 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I think its a poor choice for every technique except spinning reels. So to each his own.... Quote
Super User Scott F Posted March 2, 2016 Super User Posted March 2, 2016 I use it for everything. The stretch of mono & fluoro is a deal breaker for me. 1 Quote
Airman4754 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I run braid on everything but my spinnerbait setup. I don't like throwing fluoro, but I use it as leader for almost everything. Use what you like. Quote
Kyle46N Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Braid on everything except for mono on a medium action topwater rod for throwing smaller topwaters. Like mentioned, I'll have leaders of various lengths and pound test for different applications. Just can't beat the no stretch of braid. Sure you can read all about people losing fish on crankbaits because of braid, etc. I've never had it happen.....so no reason for me to switch. When it comes to lines and techniques like using braid, flouro, etc......do what you want to do, not what you're supposed to do. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 2, 2016 Super User Posted March 2, 2016 I use it for everything................if it's wrong, I don't want to be right. Quote
HeavyTwenty Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I use braid on everything because its cheaper in the long run... braid is suppose to last forever while the others are suppose to be changed every year. Personally I find the biggest disadvantage of lighter braid is lack of wind resistance. I've been thinking about upsizing my braid to counter that. Quote
Fishinthefish Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I use braid on nearly everything. I just fish with flouro leaders. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 2, 2016 Global Moderator Posted March 2, 2016 I'm switching to more and more braid every year it seems, but it's still only on maybe 1/4 of my combos, with a majority of it on my spinning combos. I only have 1 spinning setup that's not braid, I use that one for small cranks and jerkbaits. I use it on my C rig rod and a few casting setups that I know I'm going to fish around grass (punching, frogging rods). Other than that, I like mono or copolymer. Quote
junyer357 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Personal preference. If you are only using one kind, its easy to remeber what its spooled with, and cheaper buying bulk spool. I personally like braid for my senkos ( easy to see hi vis yellow line watching) and topwater lures. Most everything else i use flouro. I liked the increased sensitivity in braid on worms n jigs, but was costing a fortune in breakoffs when fishing some of the rocky areas i like to fish. Flouro for me has been more abraision resistant with out going to gazillion pound test braid. I Quote
paleus Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Everything. 30lb braid with 12lb fluoro leader on casting rods, 15lb braid with 8lb fluoro leader on spinning rods. Quote
Josh Smith Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I use braid for everything except a dedicated cranking setup I have, but never use (looking for a different rod.) I do a lot of fishing around, on and through structure and cover, and so appreciate the strength and sensitivity it provides. Josh Quote

Super User Raul Posted March 2, 2016 Super User Posted March 2, 2016 I use nylon practically for anything and I really would want somebody to prove I´m wrong. Quote
WPCfishing Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Braid on all my casting reels. CX leader on a few. Quote
Ridi620 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I agree its total preference. Im just saying, id rather have braid on it because you can throw it in any situation and be confident that if a biggone comes along, you wont break off. Braid all the way Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted March 2, 2016 Super User Posted March 2, 2016 I use a lot of braid for finesse spinning applications because it handles so well, but really find very little need for it on baitcasters outside of a few specialized applications (frogging, etc.). Is going "all braid" bad? Ehh, whatever you're comfortable with....just not the right style/application for me. -T9 Quote
nascar2428 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Totally up to you. Me personally, I only use spinning gear. So it's all braid for me with flouro or co poly leaders. Quote
DaleGribble Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 I use braid for everything except cranking. I will use a leader if need be for jigs and Trigs. Spinning gear is the same. Just more manageable, castable, etc for me. Quote
Super User Further North Posted March 3, 2016 Super User Posted March 3, 2016 6 hours ago, Raul said: I use nylon practically for anything and I really would want somebody to prove I´m wrong. Why? Use what you want and enjoy. I agree with all above who say it's personal preference. I run braid on everything, use mono and fluorocarbon and hybrid leaders as needed (and sometimes tieable wire leaders). Quote
0119 Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 7 hours ago, Further North said: Why? I don't know for him but for me there are so many negatives it proved impossible to fish with. I fish very clear water and braid lowered my catch rate, no matter what "professional academic experts" say about that being impossible and bass being too stupid to notice. Worse for every bass I catch I get more hits from by catch like tarpon, snook or jacks. Braid has absolutely zero, ziltch, nada abrasion resistance forcing me to use at a minimum, 20# hard mono leader, many 40# if I'm using an expensive lure! More knots and no wonder knot has an exceptional record tying big thick mono to thin braid in the real world. Those thick knots with a hard mono tag end are murder going through your guides. My shorelines are solid marl rock full of exposed ancient coral and shell. Zebra Mussels coat most submerged structure. Braid just doesn't last a trip. Yeah I could wrench my drag down, lose all the salty fish, not enjoy the fight by dragging fish in like a flw/bass pro and not experience true fishing, but what fun is that? I could change my personal requirement of having reels last me a generation and let the braid ruin my gear with the drag wrenched to the max but I don't want to. I also need the stretch of mono as I fish treble hooked lures 99% of the time. My catch rate increases from the degree of forgiveness that compensates for my sometimes being too jealous in fighting a big fish. None of these ideals or causes could affect anyone else in the world. Your right that its all personal preference. But what gets me is 99% of forum users tell folks your nuts for using anything but braid but know nothing about the conditions of which the person is fishing or what they want to get out of their fishing experience. Everyone thinks they have to fish like a pro and be equipped like a pro. Dragging a dink along the top of the waters surface isn't fishing, its imitating a t.v. personality. Nobody seems to have any idea how to really fight a fish let alone enjoy the battle. BPS isles now have a 4 foot section of none braided lines and 50 feet of double sided isle of nothing but braid. Less choice is always bad. The industry is thrilled that consumers buy braid at ever increasing prices. They are thrilled that it has negative effects on rods and reels when it is used the popular and improper way, they use that to get you to buy that next generation reel. Quote
