Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 29, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 29, 2016 I'm hoping this is just a seal but anyone have any thoughts what might cause this? It's a 2012 Mercury Pro XS and it's leaking out from under the prop and is pooled behind the prop as well. Quote

Super User tomustang Posted February 29, 2016 Super User Posted February 29, 2016 Perhaps fishing line got caught inside and tore the seal up Quote

Super User WIGuide Posted February 29, 2016 Super User Posted February 29, 2016 I'd be guessing it's just a seal there. Hopefully the shop gets it done as quick as they're saying! Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 29, 2016 Super User Posted February 29, 2016 Well, it's a little late now, but my first questions would have been, Did you check the fluid level? Did you take the bottom plug loose to see if any drops of water came out or was the gear brown/milky looking? I hate to say this but I've seen more than one perfectly good lower unit go into the shop for repair. I neighbor had paid a shop $350 to replace the seal in his lower unit because he thought it was leaking. The next time he used it and left parked in the driveway over night, it was still leaking. He said since he knew I worked on them, he was wondering if I would look at it before he took it back to the ship again. It wasn't leaking, he had been doing a lot of idling and trolling and what he had was an oily carbon residue coming out of the exhaust, running down the skegg and dripping on the driveway. So basically he threw $350 out the window. I had to laugh when he said he was going back and make them give his money back, even though I could tell the shop never did anything but clean it up and maybe pressure check it, but they didn't take anything apart. 1 Quote
tander Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Same thing happen to me but I never took it to the shop. I had cranked up my motor the day before and just let it idle, it was on a lake where you could not run the outboard. The next day I saw the oil running down on the skeg and freaked out. Got on the internet and found out it could be coming from exhaust. Cleaned it up and it has been fine ever since. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 1, 2016 Author Global Moderator Posted March 1, 2016 Mine was a seal and it had apparently been leaking enough that I had some water in my lower unit and it needed some new bearings and something else. Going to be a lot more than I was hoping, but they were really confident they'd have it done by Wednesday at the latest. I'm trying to look at it as a blessing in disguise because it could have messed it up bad if I hadn't seen it and gone down to the Classic this weekend and ran around the lake. 1 Quote

joefish Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 They did a rush powerhead rebuild for me a couple years back when I blew my engine a couple weeks a head of a trip to Rainy Lake, still running strong. I would use them again. 1 Quote

BPS would be so convenient and the hourly charge is a $9 dollar difference. Shouldn't be a complicated deal no matter what is wrong with it. With my work schedule its such a pain to get up to US Boat works. Quote
