Super User OkobojiEagle Posted February 26, 2016 Super User Posted February 26, 2016 I find it interesting that the over-whelming majority of craw patterned crankbaits are painted backward on the baits in orientation to how a craw swims. oe 4 Quote
Baitmaker Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Ha! I've thought the same thing myself. They swim backwards using their tail. It still looks odd on a bait that's designed with a wider head than tail. I just painted a (backwards) craw on one of my homemade baits and actually considered flipping it around. 1 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted February 27, 2016 Author Super User Posted February 27, 2016 There used to be a commercial bait painted in that orientation... haven't seen it for a while? oe 1 Quote

I can't buy the baits with the claws on the bills because it makes no sense! 1 Quote
BigSkyBasser Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 At least someone see's this as a problem lol. These things are spendy but arguably some of the most realistic craw cranks out there right now . 1 Quote

Their HFC craw has been on my list of baits to buy for awhile and I keep forgetting about it. Supposed to have that hunting action similar to a wart. Quote
MDBowHunter Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 It is kinda crazy, but I seriously doubt that a bass is going to say that crawfish is swimming backwards I better not try and eat it. 3 Quote

I agree but its no different than a guy not putting a small catch back in the immediate water for fear its going to alert the others he was caught. 1 Quote

Super User buzzed bait Posted February 29, 2016 Super User Posted February 29, 2016 i'm assuming the bass aren't studying it long enough to know, and once again, we only see these baits how our eyes interpret them, not the bass. since crawfish "walk" the opposite direction of how they "swim" i wonder if the bass is really capable of processing the fact that the pattern is reversed for the direction the crawfish is moving? I don't know anybody who fishes that bait and I have a couple questions. Do you fish it in lakes, streams or both? Do you leave the front treble on when fished? How does it fish through weed covered bottoms? oe Quote

It did real well about a month ago for my nephew running it parallel to shore from our boat along some log cover in about 5-6 ft. of water. I haven't tried it in a stream since I don't fish those much anymore. You'll catch some weeds, but I get plenty of action from the bass and even a few crappie when throwing it. I leave both trebles on. Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I think the backwards paint job is silly (and can be improved upon), but I also fish a crankbait fast as a reaction bait. So long as the color and patterns look like a crayfish, I think it's close enough. We also fish spinnerbaits that look like coat hangers with hula skirts. Reaction baits, dude. Quote
tholmes Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Mann's makes one. Smallmouth candy, especially the 1/8 oz. size. Tom . Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 5, 2016 Super User Posted March 5, 2016 As fast as a crankbait is moving I doubt that they get a good enough look at it to guess which way the color pattern is swimming? The Rebel craw along with the Luhr Jensen Klawdad have caught me a lot of fish but I would guess it has more to do with the color and general shape than the realistic appearance of the bait. Super User bowhunter63 Posted March 5, 2016 Super User Posted March 5, 2016 The craw colored lipless baits have been on fire so far this year. With a red or deep brown tint. Quote
