Jtrout Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 My co-worker has a glass stream 1550 pro bass he is willing to sell me for 1200 dollars he says it runs it has a 30 johnson o.b and a prowler trolling motor. It was last used in 2014. Does that sound like a good deal and does anybody have any knowledge about it. I also dont know the year its late 80s or early 90s this will also be my first boat. Heres some pics of it Quote
Bassin Bob Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I had a similar tri hull years ago. The main problem with those boats is a lot of wood was used. Mine had stringers made of wood. Over the years, they rotted away leaving the boat hull very weak and constantly cracking the fiberglass and leaking. My advice is to check thoroughly and water test it, including running it with the outboard. If it leaks, it's not worth what he is asking. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 26, 2016 Super User Posted February 26, 2016 Most likely several hundred dollars will need to be spent on motor if you don't know how to clean carbs a replace water pump yourself. As for the boat, as mentioned, everything under that fiberglass shell is wood and subject to be rotten. Get over in it and walk around, bouncing a little as you do and see how the floor feels. Make sure it's good and firm. Tilt the motor all the way out and stand on the mid section at the anticav plate and bounce up and down (or have someone do it for you) while you watch the transom to see if it flexes or gives in any way. I has to be solid and firm. If there is any sign of movement where the motor's mounted or across the whole back of it, it's JUNK. The next thing of concern would be the floatation foam, if it has any. Back then, they used open cell foam and the stuff was like a sponge. The biggest difference is you can get water out of a sponge, it's extremely difficult, to almost impossible to get water out of saturated, open cell flotation foam. This rots the stringers and adds a couple hundred pounds of weight to the boat. Then you want to turn the steering wheel all the way each direction to make sure it's fairly easy to turn. If it's hard, then you need a new cable and on those systems most of the time they came as a unit so you have to buy the helm with the cable. UNDERSTAND, don't think you are just going to lube it in some fashion. That ain't gonna happen, it will need to be replaced. So, if you can do the motor work yourself of have a good friend that can, and everything else checks good, then yes, $1,200 in a fare price. Also realize, that motor is a little small for that hull so don't expect no speed demon, but it will get you around. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 26, 2016 Super User Posted February 26, 2016 Tell him you'll take $300 to remove it from his property for him. Otherwise - keep Looking. There are better deals out there. A-Jay 2 Quote

joefish Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 If the hull and engine did check out (which I doubt from the pics) you are going to need new tires on trailer, possibly bearings and seals, and new batteries for the boat so no way is it worth $1200. I would keep looking. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 26, 2016 Super User Posted February 26, 2016 I think I'd be passing on this too. There are better options out there. I think I'd even go back to my two man bass tender over this for about the same price. There's a whole lot less to go wrong on one of those than this old glass stream. Quote
