Welp, I had my ATM Card skinned. Lowlifes stole $330 in one transaction. I just cancelled the card. This is not what I wanted to wake up to on a Thursday morning...

Been there done that. Twice. 1st time was a CVS in Florida and the 2nd time was in a restaurant close to home. I hate thieves worse than just about anything.

I have had this happen quite a few times.  Just this last month I had an unemployment claim filed on my behalf against my own business.  The Unemployment Agency for my state was completely hostile toward me when we called to fight the claim and let them know that there is a problem.  At the same time I had both of my business cards and personal cards cancelled and replaced due to fraud and two of my credit cards for the same.  With them filing an unemployment claim they have my SS#, so we had to file a police report and I spent an entire day freezing my credit.  So far no other problems and nothing out of the ordinary, but now the waiting game begins. 
We think we know where the breach was done at, but we cannot prove it yet.  The detective is pretty confident that we are right.  If we can ever prove it we will be fling a lawsuit.

A word of advice.  Always use your ATM/Debit card as a credit card purchase if you can.  You are then covered through Visa/MC/AMEX/DIS just like a credit card would be when it comes to fraud.  Usually means you file paperwork with the financial institution and it is fixed rather quickly (mine has usually only taken 2-3 business days at most).  You also get the same protection for purchases (ie...lower price, warranty, wrong items...etc).  If you are not someone who uses your credit a lot, then do a credit freeze.  The cost varies by state, but most of them are $10 to freeze and you do the main three credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax) and when you need them you can just unfreeze the one your lender needs or thaw it for a period of time.  This will lock down any future problems.  You are allowed to pull any of your credit reports annually for free so check them.  You never know and they can vary.

twice here as well, both times some overseas scammers.  one time about $400 the other time about $1300 in 30 minutes.  

once in nashville, tn on my anniversary other time was this past august in delray beach, fl for my birthday!

both times bank worked it out and got my money back.

Just happened to my wife's account not 2 months ago. Drained her checking and because she had overdraft protection linked to her savings, drained nearly all of that. Luckily he company has a credit union and that's where she banks. Took about 15 minutes worth of paper signing and they shut down her account, opened a new one and put every dime back in it. Now the credit union is going after the scumbags.

That's about the same situation here. They overdrafted and took about $150 from my emergency savings. I should have a new card and accounts in about 2 days is what it looks like at my credit union.

Why don't you just dump the debit card & only use a credit card.

Looks like the bank will be reimbursing me with a check for the funds. I will have to put them back the way I want them. Thanks for the well wishes.

I am the kind of person who hates to use the credit cards.  If find that if I use only the money I have in the bank at the moment I can curb my spending.  If I just assume that I will pay it all off at the end of the month, I tend to lose track of my spending and go overboard.  I have also learned that it pays to have a few cards, this way if one gets shut down I have a backup to use while it gets worked out.  Lately I have been going another step further and just using cash.  That is the ultimate spending control, except when you are purchasing online.

I have had my card compromised twice. First was $500 second was $200. Second time was $200 worth of gas in Mississippi somewhere. I just pictured them inviting all there family and friends to the pump. "Come down on 87th I got the hookup on gas" Money was sorted out in about a week. I gotta tell you though as a college student a week without that money was rough.

A few years ago I filled up on gas at a local station
here in Virginia...

Next day my wife checked our account and someone
used my card at two stop-n-go type stations in the
Houston area down in TX. 

Bank of America reimbursed us.

I remembered there was a "shady" vehicle parked there
at the gas station. Felt like it was watching me, up to 
no good. Likely they were skimming the signals from
the card swipe. This was prior to having to enter your 
zip code.

I keep hoping someone steals my information. Maybe my credit score will improve then. I mean hell I think the thief would be mad about it. Hard to steal something from nothing. I mean seriously what can they possibly do that I don't already do? What are they going to make payments on time and be nice to the employees of financial institutions looking for money? Heavens knows they won't be ordering any Asian cuisine in Alabama using my credintials. Might end up beaten to death by a soup ladle. 

I am sorry to hear about you having to go through this, and wish you a positive outcome.

Not that I'm careless or make any unusual or purchases that would be considered "risky" (whatever that means) but in the last say 5 years or so I've had Both credit cards & debit card accounts hacked or the numbers stolen or whatever you want to call it - Several times.  To the point now where I numb to it - I have the process of recovering the funds down pat.  First time some fine human jammed a credit card for 17 separate $810 charges for something in like Bermuda - I'm betting airline tickets - Maxed of the card.  USAA & Bank of America ALWAYS take care of it.  I've had lengthy phone conversations with the Fraud Department of both institutions - and according to them - there's nothing I can do about.   I was told not to be careless with my information but to just go about my business.  Seems to them it's just the cost of doing business.

 I actually opened a line of credit to use only in these situations - I call it my "Fraud Protection card".  I only use it when necessary while I'm waiting for one of the other New cards to arrive in the mail. 

TIP - Most Banks have some kind of alert you can sign up for where you get an e-mail Every time an account is used - also you can get daily balance checks emailed as well - I have that now on EVERYTHING and know about every transaction seconds after it's made. Highly recommended and a nice piece of mind.

 Also, just to speed up the process, Always ask your financial institution to Express mail replacement cards - usually they'll do it free of change.

Otherwise - it's could be 2 weeks in the mail

Sorry to hear that!  

 

I got got my card stolen on vacation once while I was out in Utah.  F'ers cleaned me out of like $2k and then of course I had no money whatsoever, and no way to access my savings either!  That was a really rough couple days out there lemme tell ya.

I am not sold that chip systems are any more secure right now.  I mean yeah, if they use a blank then the chip activated card would be a deterrent, assuming the vendors have a chip machine but it wouldn't prevent online based transactions at all.

All of the disputes are handled pretty much the same and fall under the same regs whether it is credit or debit card or even ACH. There are a few nuances but no need to bore you with those details.....Generally if you are legit and make the claim in the timeframe you will get your money back quickly.

Nothing is fool proof, and the OP was referring to skimming which the chip will stop. Anything to make it harder to duplicate will help. No they don't work on online orders but you must have captured the account to make that happen.

Another option, is phone/watch pay apps like Samsung Pay. Nothing to swipe.
