RedHeadAngler Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I'd like some suggestions on an easy way to sell rods besides the flea market or eBay. Any ideas? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 Easy way is to ask no more than half your cost of the rod. Lots of takers then. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 Not exactly sure what is meant by an "Easy Way" to sell rods. If you're referring to not having to ship them then an add on a local buy & sell site may be the way to go. Sale here implies "Local Pick Up". If you're looking to send your gear to a good home - there's no better place than right here on the BR Fishing Flea Market forum. A-Jay Quote
tander Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Try your local Craig's List, that's where I bought my truck and boat. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 I don't bother with ebay as a seller anymore, by the time they get their cut, and paypal get's their cut, you are getting hosed. I am not against them both charging a fee, as they do provide a service for which they should be payed for, I just don't care for how high a % they take now. I have bought and sold tons of stuff on here ...............every transaction has been smooth and hassle free. 3 Quote
stkbassn Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Yeah, rods are always a chore and a costly item to ship. There's also the extra worry of the rod making it to your buyer in the same shape you sent it in. In other words, you just have pray the shipping company doesn't mistreat or mishandle your package. So you need a sturdy tube like the one TW uses for their rods. I do re-use these and never have a problem, they are pretty thick and tough. Or you could buy some PVC but you need to be sure the opening will accept the rod and whatever "trigger" it might have under the handle side. You'll have to cut the PVC to correct length. Also, if you want to sell the rod reasonably fast you need to sell it for a decent price that's enticing enough to get interest right away and you need to accept that shipping is the cost of doing business so you need to offer free shipping to the buyer. If you decide to throw a few bucks on top of your asking price to offset that cost for yourself that's fine, still offer free shipping if you get my meaning. Did you say easy way? Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 It may be worth asking what you have as well? Keep in mind shipping can range from $20 to $35 on average. If the rod is under a $100 retail and you sell it for $70 shipped it will be only $50 or less in sales money for you. If you sell locally you avoid shipping and there is more profit but you have a limited market. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 Sell them in lots of 2+ to keep shipping down and the amount you're going to lose on them. Other than local sites there is no easy way. A $300 rod would typically sell for about $170-220 shipped depending on the demand for it and how old it is. Then subtract $40 for shipping, insurance, and paypal fees. You aren't left with too much after that. Also depending on how much you care about the buyer receiving an undamaged item you could have another $20 in shipping materials. I ship in 2" pvc pipe with pvc endcaps plus use 1" pipe insulation to cover the entire rod. Runs me about $21 but I know it will arrive undamaged and don't have to worry about fighting with the shipper for an insurance claim. Or the buyer being unhappy and possibly filling a paypal claim. 1 Quote
smallie.mike Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I agree about ebay! What's really bad is they take their money AFTER they charge you to put it in your PayPal account. So you are paying a fee to transfer thier percentage of money to your paypal account. And now they take 10% of the shipping cost too! If you sell something for a 100 bucks you get about 87, total nonsense. Plus as a seller on ebay if the buyer wants to screw you ebay will ALWAYS side with the buyer period. 2 Quote

I filed a claim on a rod that was described as in excellent condition and it was not. I provided pictures and all. Didn't even get the partial $25 refund I was asking for. Quote

Well you could have gotten all your money back easily. Ebay has a 100% money back guarantee for buyers. If the buyer doesn't refund your money so many days after you file a claim ebay WILL refund your money then take it from the seller themselves. Quote
LunkerFisher Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 You need a friend like I have. He waits each season to buy my used gear for a song before buying anything new. Works for both of us. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted February 25, 2016 Super User Posted February 25, 2016 Tell the guy's in your local club at your next meeting. I'm sure someone will be looking for a good deal. Quote
Cyacnba Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 You can try Craigslist, but you should be prepared for many low-ballers. Unless you have some crazy deal on a really popular rod, I don't think there's an easy way to sell rods. I'm still struggling to sell my Tatula rod lol. I wish Boston had more fishermen... Quote

Missourifishin Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 This is why I plan to use mine for MANY years, so I will at least know I got my money's worth when I sell them for next to nothing some day 1 Quote
kcdinkerz Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I'd post on c list or find local bass clubs on fb and post their. Never buying on eBay again after the last incident. Was sent a wrong rod and I had to pay shipping back, the seller even argued that it was the right rod, they sent me a medium instead of a medium heavy lol. Quote
GoCougs14 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Just checked out bccboards.com Wow you guys werent lying....this is exactly what I was looking for! Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 25, 2016 Super User Posted February 25, 2016 Sell the for what they are worth not what you think they're worth! Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted February 26, 2016 Super User Posted February 26, 2016 You might try a Google search and see if there are any second hand tackle stores around you. I had one by me for a few years that sold items on consignment. Quote
