Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 I had a neighbor give me a few packs of black Zoom Fat Albert Single Tail Grubs because he never uses them ... *Surely there are applications for a pure black single tail grub ? I'm thinking to use a black single tail grub as a trailer on a black & blue swim jig would be appropriate - any other ideas come to mind for using black single tail grubs ? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 24, 2016 They make a good bladed jig trailer or a stand alone bait on a jighead or splitshot rig. You can put them on the back of a spinnerbait also. 2 Quote
DCales84 Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 All black grubs will work with any jig you use. grubs also make a good A-Rig bait as well. Maybe use brighter color grubs with one or two black grubs mixed in. Quote

EdKras Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 The fat alberts also work as a compact flipping/pitching bait. 2/0 hook and a 1/4 oz weight. The plus is that it doubles as a moving bait when you reel it back to the boat 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 I'd use them as swimjig or chatterbait trailers. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 All of the above, PLUS, I primarily fish them weightless and weedless on a 1/0 EWG hook. Several thousand (2,061 to be exact) bass caught over the last 6 seasons with Fat Alberts rigged weightless... Largest "Fat Albert " girl... 2 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 I don't know of any better all-purpose bait than a single-tail grub, and I don't think there's a better all-purpose color than black. Swim it, hop it, drag it, flip it, weedless, on a jighead, as a trailer on a jig, spinnerbait, buzzbait, chatterbait.....do whatever you want, they will eat it. 3 Quote

How well does the rig cast without any weight? Quote

How well does the rig cast without any weight? Rigged weedless on a 1/0 EWG - no weight. The file photo below shows the rigging (although it's a Kalin, not a Fat Albert). ALSO, single tail grubs rigged like this will spin like crazy. I use a small ball-bearing swivel at the end of the mainline and about a 24" - 30" flouro leader down to the grub. I normally cast them on a medium-extra fast spinning rod and don't have any problems with distance. When I do need more distance, I switch to a Gander Mountain grub which is heavier than the Fat Albert or Kalin. Another option would be to cast them on a medium-light power rod. For me, this is a surface, or near surface presentation. I rarely fish them more than about 5 feet deep when rigged weightless. I use this when bank beating, in skinny water; dragging it over, around or through slop or cover; or any other time I think the fish are higher in the water column. 1 Quote

That sounds awesome, I have a crap ton of Kalins, I betcha this would be money around reeds/bullrushes. Thanks for the idea. Quote
