Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 24, 2016 Did I catch a misshapen wiper? Or a monstrosity of a white bass? It actually went 4lb 12oz on the Berkley digital scale. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted February 24, 2016 Super User Posted February 24, 2016 That fish is a Wiper Bass aka Hybrid Striped Bass. Quote

That was my first thought as well but the lack of solid lines below the lateral line and the single tooth patch along with the body shape really left me wondering. Whatever it was, it was only 18.25" long and crazy fat. Our hybrids normally look more like these ones. Quote

Those are some since Hybrid Striped Bass,we have them down here as well and they are much stronger than a Largemouth Bass. The first one you posted looks like the Hybrid Striped Bass I catch down here. The only way to truly know is to have a Biologist examine it.If it's a White Bass it's a monster! Our state record white bass is nearly 6 pounds and 3 pounders aren't uncommon, so it's possible. Aren't they Sunshine bass that you have in Florida? I know it depends on which species was the male and which was the female when they make the hybrid on which version you end up with. Quote

Yes we have Sunshine Bass (Hybrid Striped Bass),Striped Bass, and White Bass in the State of Florida. There's also another Hybrid Striped Bass called the Palmetto Bass. Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I would say she is full of eggs, but if that is the case she would not be a wiper since they are sterile, right? Quote
Molay1292 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 The body shape, tooth patch and stripes all suggest a White Bass, def. a hog if that is the case. Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted February 25, 2016 Super User Posted February 25, 2016 I'll go with one fat wiper. Judging by the broken up lower lines, I'd say they're stretch marks 2 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted February 25, 2016 Super User Posted February 25, 2016 To me it looks like their is a lump on one side of the fish that would indicate something going on with the spine of the fish. I see it in hatchery trout a lot, a 10" fish that weighs what a 13-14"er should because it looks like you put it in a trash compactor. I've cleaned a couple fish like that and usually the spine is all jacked up with a lot of fat surrounding it, you can't eat the fish because the filet is all fat and no meat. Quote

It was so fat, that is it's gut making it look like that. It didn't have any injuries, just packed to the absolute max full of shad. Quote

I don't know anything about white bass though, body shape sure does look like a white bass, but the lines don't. Quote
Silas Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 We catch a lot of those in South Louisiana although I've not see. One that big. Usually run in large schools of same size and love Gay Blades . silver Buddies and Little George's we sometimes call them "Yellow bass" as they have a golden sheen to them. Fun to catch and eat!
