Super User clayton86 Posted February 22, 2016 Super User Posted February 22, 2016 Been thinking of canceling my cable tv despite the protest from my brats. I'm sick of paying nearly 200 a month to watch the Disney channel or listen to it play in the background since o don't spend much time in the living room. We limit the kids time on the tv but it's still pricy considering I don't watch tv at all and I'm paying all this money for kids shows. I can cancel cable and keep Internet for $20 a month saving myself $150. We already have Netflix and the kids have a xbox and PS3 so do I really need a streaming device? If so what ones do you recommend Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted February 22, 2016 Super User Posted February 22, 2016 We have basic cable, $30 per month. It has a coupe pbs channels, so enough for the kids, and nothing crazy like on the kids channels on cable. I don't consider a lot of the programming I have seen on cable "kid" channels actually kid appropriate. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted February 22, 2016 Super User Posted February 22, 2016 get an HD antenna, something like "the leaf" on amazon for like $20 or whatever it is now.... gets me like 12-15 HD channels, including the major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) then get one of those units of your choice. i have all 3 of them and never ever ever ever use the chromecast, useless brick. apple tv and roku are good. cool thing with apple tv is if you have an apple computer, you can "mirror" your computer on the TV. so if you can stream live TV, find free movies, etc. you can watch them on your TV screen.... 68camaro Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I am working towards being cable free, we currently stream via apple TV, have Netflix and Roku. For local channels get decent digital antenna, pretty inexpensive like $50 bucks or so. Next step is to cut the cable. Slowly getting family ready for it. People I know that have done it are generally happy they did. Quote
HookdUP Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Get a "flashed" fire stick for 80 and have every channel every sport you've every thought of known to man. I kid you not .. Google it .. I could but a curado a month with what I save and trust me my tackle box notices .. 1 Quote
atcoha Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Been thinking of doing the same for awhile...I have netflix and amazon prime. Plenty of stuff to watch, you can find whatever else you want floating on the intarwebs. I just get over ruled when I talk about cutting cable and cell phone stuff, lol. Quote
Turtle135 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I get over the air HD signals very well where I live which gives me the networks, PBS and another 5-6 useful channels. Then for $ 25.00 a month I subscribe to "Sling TV" (not to be confused with the "Sling Box" devices) which pipes typical TV content in via the internet. (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPNU, SEC Network. CNN, AMC, TNT, A&E, TBS, etc.), It also has the Disney Channel for the kids. Google Sling TV and you can see their channel lineup. Sling TV is in year two of operation and while they were a little buggy in the beginning they have been rock solid for me for the last 6-7 months. I do use the Roku 3 to pipe the content over to my TV via a HDMI cable. This keeps my computer free. Quote
BassnChris Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 3 months ago we shut off cable. Bought a TiVo so we'd have a dvr......bought an hd antenna. Get nearl 40 channels using the antenna. Netflix Hulu subscription are total of $16.00/month. We already have Amazon acct so we get Amazon videos too. And you can watch YouTube and some others thru the TiVo too. kind of miss cable once in a while but sure is good to be shed of that cable bill! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted February 23, 2016 Super User Posted February 23, 2016 If i could get the NFL package i would get rid of directv but until then i am stuck... Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 23, 2016 Author Super User Posted February 23, 2016 Yeah forgot to mention I have Amazon prime to so I really have no need for cable. I'm cutting it this week. Free up money for new fishing gear. Quote
Buckeye Ron Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 TWC,which is all I can get here in the country, just announced that they are going 100% digital which means I now have to get four boxes to able to use my TV's. Add another $16.00 to the already too high bill. We have very basic cable plus Internet and phone for what will soon be upwards of $185.00 a month. For that I don't get fox 1,nbcsn,and others. I bought a Roku last year and it has some good stuff on it but you need Hulu and Netflix to watch network shows. What I'm learning is that TV is vastly over rated, especially when you consider what else you could buy with that money. Or maybe even save it! Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted February 23, 2016 Super User Posted February 23, 2016 I have dish and love it. Service is great and I can call and beat them up on prices and promotions all the time. I get free movie channels and on demand credits all the time. Wife and I rent a dish movie every weekend and because of their customer service, I have only paid for a handful in the last 2 years. Super User fishwizzard Posted February 23, 2016 Super User Posted February 23, 2016 We gave up on cable maybe 4-5 years ago and subscribed to all the streaming services available, it comes out to maybe $30-40 per month. However, right now the programing on most streaming services are becoming less and less desirable, if you are into new stuff. I suspect the content producers are realizing at last that streaming/on demand is the future and are charging more and more for streaming rights. Netflix especially has gotten much "emptier" in the last year or two. Even so, I will never go back to cable, the cost is just insane, even if you end up, like us, upgrading your internet service to make streaming multiple shows at once smoother. Quote
S. Sass Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Man I dream of dumping that $100 a month cable TV. I am just not extremely tech savvy on the TV stuff. This thread has motivated me to get back to dumping the waste of money. They show the same movies over and over and the rest of the TV programming with very few exceptions is garbage. Who in their sane mind would watch the Kardashians or want your kids to see the PC correct version of everything such as Sesame Street. Thanks for the motivation. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted February 23, 2016 Super User Posted February 23, 2016 We have Cox here in Hampton Roads. Been with them for a long time. But the price gouging got to the point I called to dump them - this after years of discounts after calling and asking for them. I told them I was going to keep internet and dump TV. We dumped our home phone service too. She said that'll be ~$69.95 per month. ... OOOOORRRRR ... we can offer you *Basic* cable AND the same internet package for $65/month. I scratched my head and said wait! For LESS than just internet your going to give me Internet AND TV? OK, sign me up. But now I've lost a few channels, and more to go with the all-digital extortion scheme. I don't want to pay for 3 set top boxes now. Verizon just came into the area with FiOS and double Cox speeds with TV for about the same money, so we may very well switch to Verizon so long as the cable they run is buried. With all the hurricanes we get, if they run the cable from the pole to my house (aerial) it will inevitably go offline. Often I can have Internet even if there's an outage now (generator). Quote
Rick Howard Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Fire stick at my house. Canned cable 2 years ago. Outrageous expensive especially for something I do not use. My wife liked cable but I finally was able to talk her into firestick. We pay for netfilx and HBO. My wife was is a prime member so that gives us a few extra goodies. She uses the free hulu also. Internet is $40 a month. In total we pay $67 a month. We enjoy TV more than we use to. Quote
