I would like to buy a nice shakey head rod. I was looking at the 7 ft medium heavy Shimano crucial spinning rods. Has anyone had any experience with these. Would like to buy one around that price. 150 to 200$. Any other suggestions on rods? Also any suggestions on a reel?

My main one is a Phenix Maxim 7' Med and I love it. It's well within your price range. I fish up to 3/4oz heads on it all the way down to 60ft and it does great.

Shakyheads are a bait that, IMO, require the most sensitive rod and reel combo you can afford. I use a 6' 10" M/XF St. Croix LTB with a 2500 Shimano CI4 Stradic with 10lb Seaguar braid and about 4' of Seaguar fluoro leader. If you shop around a little bit, you can find that rod lightly used in your price range. The 6' 8" M/XF Avid would be another good option.

What pound test do you use? Normally I use 12 pd Berkley vanish floro. I'm having a problem with getting good Hook sets with my 7' medium rod. Lost alot of fish because of it. That's why I was thinking of switching to MH.

It's 10lb test/2lb diameter braid with 8-10 pound fluoro leader. You won't have any problems with hooksets if you switch to the braid.

I can also vouch for the St Croix Legend Tournament Bass 610mxf. It's called their "shakey head" rod. Its super sensitive, very light weight and comfortable in the hand.

It's an extra fast action but can cast extremely well. It never had any issues with 1/8 oz jigs depending on the plastic used, or any 3/16 or 1/4 oz jigs.

The sensitivity is awesome. I love feeling every pebble and stick I drag my lure over when fishing bottom contact lures like shakey head's or tubes.

Made in the USA too with an awesome guaranteed warranty.

And also man what knot do you like for tieing two lines together?

It's a great rod for any finesse/bottom contact presentations you would want. I'm guessing the knot quote is from something else.....but just for the heck of it, I use a uni uni know for braid to fluoro leaders.

Thanks! Yeah that rod is just out of my price range but I might save up and get it.

Understandable, it's not cheap! It's definitely not gonna disappoint if you decide to save up for it. Best of luck!

IMHO, that's too long and heavy for shakey hd.  My recommendation would be a mid 6' Medium Fast or XFast spinning rig with a 2500 series reel and 8lb Floro.

The biggest problem with guys new to shakey head fishing is patience on the bite. You will feel the hit 90% of the time. First, use braid. Second point your rod down to the water, reel until you feel weight, and just give a firm pull back on the rod while you reel.

If you are using good heads that actually standup the fish will be hooked dead center in the top of the mouth almost every time. That's where the Medium rod and your drag come in so they don't rip the hook out.

Yes, I use to have a 7' ML/F and 7' M/F, neither was a very good shakyhead rod. The Avid is a much better option, even the Mojo 6' 8" M/F would be a better option. I have the Mojo, it's a very good all around spinning rod.

^^This^^ ! The 6'8" - 6'10" length in a M action is ideal and you will find the better shakeyhead specific spinning rods in that length range and M action (MH action is too stiff for shakeyhead) .

Thabks for advice are you talking about braid with floro leader?

Anyone like the TFO rods a local guy can give me a deal on some?

What  weight shaky heads?  I have half a dozen rigs that I might throw shaky heads on.   For the most part,  I use a bait caster set up for 5/16 & up.  I use spinning gear for 3/16 and lighter.  For quarter ounce heads ( which I use most of the time, I have a dedicated rig.   I have an older Falcon Eakins Jig Special (6'10", on the medium side of MH) paired with a Chronarch 50 and 10 lb Abrazx.

I use a Dobyns Champion 683 casting rod. It might not be in your price range but you might look at a Dobyns Savvy 693 which is in your range. If you can save for the Champion I would do that.

I usually use 3/16 or 1/4 I've always used a spinning rod. That how I was taught. I didn't even realize people used baitcasters until a while ago lol!

I have the 7'3" TFO drop shot rod and it's a very good rod. I guess you could say I upgraded to a Phenix UMBX for drop shotting but I still use the TFO for Ned and Mojo rigs. It's very well constructed and has quality parts. If you can catch a deal on one I would say go for it.

For technique I use 20lb PP high-vis with an 8lb Flouro leader on all of my spinning setups.
