In new hampshire its the law to take a boater safett class and pass a test after, to drive anything over 25 hp. They made this law about 15 years ago... I would say we have atleast one colision every year still.  People truly just need to slow down.

The dumbest thing I see and have to navigate around every year are fairly small lakes with a ton of ski boats on them with no enforced pattern. It's just a bunch of boats doing whatever they feel like at high speeds with people all over in the water. That is the fault of the enforcers as there should always be a very visible and posted ski route on every body of water.

I do my best to keep to the outer edge and get through it and out of it as fast as possible. Everyone has to have a boater's license here, but you'd never be able to tell on lakes. Rivers and salt water are totally different though.

On my home lake, which is about 7200 acres, this is one of the most annoying and dangerous situations I encounter:  A large number of ski boats doing figure eights and oval treks throughout sections of the lake with no rhyme or reason as to what direction they are going to go next.  And they will turn right in front of you while pulling a skier or tuber forcing you to react.  You really have to be aware of all the boats around you when navigating such an area.  While reacting to a ski boat to avoid it, it would be easy to place yourself in the path of another boat.  Be aware of everything around you, and if you feel disconcerted in any way with the situation slow down and get out of the traffic.

This is such a tragedy and so unexpected for the family of the deceased.  My heart goes out to them.

We have a very popular lake here that the big time bass fisherman love!  They are the worst ones on the water. While I slowly work my way along the shore I will be cut off at full speed to get to a laydown. They come in on plane, cast five times and leave with the throttle down. In my opinion Fisherman are the worst boaters!

As a USCG licensed Captain,  I am hyper sensitive to other boats on the water around me.  Knowing you have clients lives in your hands will make you that way.  The more I am on the water,  the more respect for what "could" happen.

Always be ready to make an evasive maneuver but,  as others have said,  never put yourself in the position to have to.
