VABasser Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 I just received in the mail a pair of new green mirror 580G Jose Costas that I bought off a well reputed seller on Ebay. In the initial try on and examination I noticed a few things that bothered me. I don't know if I'm being OCD (my first pair of > $50 glasses) or if I have legitimate cause to be concerned. There is a 14 day return policy so I can return them if needed. 1. The stamp on the upper left corner of the lens just says 580, not 580G like I expected. Is that normal? Even though it's a high rated seller, since I bought these off Ebay I want to be extra careful they are authentic. 2. The Jose's have a unique spring hinge on the ear pieces. A sales rep told me only some pairs of Costas have this hinge. I noticed one of the screws is tightened further down than the other one. Aesthetically there's no problem, but it seems like the side that is tightened more doesn't flex as easy at the hinge as the other side. It's not a drastic difference, but nonetheless bothers me for a $260 retail pair of sunglasses. Can I fix this with a little flat head jewelers screwdriver? 3. Lastly, and my biggest concern. When I tried them on and wore them around for a bit, it seemed like they wanted to sit slightly cockeyed on my face. I couldn't tell if this was my imagination, I had a crooked face, or the frame itself was bent in some subtle way. I laid them unfolded on a flat surface and noticed that the back of one ear piece rested on the counter like you would expect, however the other one was about 1/8 inch off the counter. It's too hard for my naked eye to tell what isn't symmetrical in the frame, but the fact both ear pieces don't rest on a flat surface seem to prove there is something going on. Would you agree, or is a slight variation like this not out of the ordinary? If you don't mind checking your pair and seeing, I don't know if the crooked feeling is in my mind, or if frame is off. Thanks for any help, considering I want these to last me numerous years of hard fishing, I want to be sure I'm getting a perfect pair. Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 If you spent that much on glasses the fit should feel right. Send them back. I suggest that if you want to buy online drive over to Bass Pro and try them on first so you know what you are getting. 1 Quote
THE_Vue's Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 If you dicide to return make sure you do before the 14 days. To make shipping cheaper send it back as first class mail. Should be about 2.54 to send the item back Quote
VABasser Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 I've tried probably 20 pairs of Costas on before buying these, so I know that Jose is the frame I want. Return shipping is free. I'm interested if anyone has a response to my specific questions? Quote
camman Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 I have a pair of Costa's Stringer 580G in Green Mirror. I bought these probably 8 years ago or so from Cabelas. I just looked and mine doesn't say 580 on it at all. I don't know if that is something on newer pairs of glasses or model specific. I will say when I bought mine 8 years ago I decided to treat myself to the glass lenses over plastic...I'm so glad I did, they have held up to a lot of abuse. As for tightening the screw, I think I've done it once or maybe twice on my pair in the 8 years I've had them. My pair has both ear pieces touching on a flat surface when I put it down as described. 1 Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I have a pair of Corbinas 580G, no spring hinges on those. They sit perfectly on a flat surface. They only say 580 On the lens.. If they are from a reputable seller I'm sure authenticity is not a problem. Like others have said though for $260 you should be 100% satisfied. Swap them with a pair you are content with. 1 Quote

Are they an authorized dealer? Sounds like you're paying top $$ so they should be. if they are not, send them back and buy from an authorized dealer. That way Costa will cover you if you have any issues down the road. Regardless, send them back, you can bet they'll go over the next pair they send you with a fine toothed comb. Quote

Not an authorized dealer, to my knowledge there is no such thing on eBay. I paid $150 for them, which is a great price. I contacted Costa directly and they said it doesn't matter if you buy them from an authorized dealer or not, they will recognize the warranty as long as they're Costas Quote
MDBowHunter Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I have a new pair of fantails that are 580g and they have 580 one lens. Mine were bought at BPS Quote

My rx costas ...they would not warranty at all, even from an authorized eye dr./costa rx dealer. I was pretty po'd about that.(RX costa cost mucho dinero). The arms started deforming...Costa can hug a root. Just google costa warranty horror stories, the past 10 years, their warranties have become vaporware. Buy what YOU like, just giving some info, first hand. Quote
papajoe222 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 My 580Gs don't have the G on the lens, just 580. I'd send them back and contact the seller and inform him why you're returning them Quote
TxHawgs Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 No one's face is perfectly symmetrical. And most people's ears are higher or lower than one another, hence the reason you get your glasses fitted to your face. Normal thin wired glasses you can bend the arms and adjust the nose piece to fit them to your face. With glasses such as the ones you purchased can only be fitted by heating them up and adjusting them to fit. I've had several Costas with frames like that and they sat crooked on my face and we're very uncomfortable so I returned them. Frames like that look cool but unless your ears pretty close to parallel they are gonna look crooked and not be comfortable. I also come to learn that whenever I buy glasses with glass lenses they make them too heavy and after hrs of wearing them they too become bothersome on my nose bridge. My frames also sat the same way on a table one arm higher than the other. Think they need to be like that to fold. So that's my .02 worth, currently wearing Maui Jims and like them very much but they are glass lens and get too heavy. Quote
EllisJuan Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 1. Just saying 580 is normal 2. Yes, you can just tighten/loosen the screws to get the hinge resistance you desire. 3. Heat up the temple arm with a hair dryer and adjust it until they sit flat when upside down on a table. 4 hours ago, atcoha said: I would not hold my breath on costa warranty. They just sent me a pair of lenses the other week because I had a slight concern with my 3 year old pair. Quote
UKCATSBASSER Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I know $250 is a pretty price for a set of glasses. But to me I'd rather not have to full with is this a legitimate pair or not. Only order from authorized retailers. Same goes for high end rods and reels. 1 Quote

I don't know how you were able to get Maui Jim to just send out a set of lens'. I owned nothing but Maui Jims for many years, and have sent probably 5 pairs of sunglasses back to have lens repaired. Not one time would they just send out the lens, I had to send in the frames in with a check for $100. They explained to me that since they give a lifetime warranty on the frames that they wouldnt allow a customer to change lens. I have now switched over to Costas and wish I would've long ago as they are better glasses for fishing. Side by side my 580g Costas allow me to see deeper into the water then my Maui Jims. Other then that they're probably pretty equal though Quote

Later I got contacts and wanted to be able to wear these, but I realized when I sent them in to have RX lenses put in they did not send back my original non-rx lenses when they returned them. I called, explained, and they sent a set of non-rx lenses to my local Maui RX dealer who swapped them for me at no charge. Quote
