Matteo6317 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Why is it that some crankbait rods have a fast action and not moderate? I was looking at the bps crankin stick and cabelas tournament sx crankshaft and both have fast action tips. I'd appreciate some input before I pull the trigger. thanks 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Because they're just recommend uses for the Rod. There is no "right or wrong" plus the definition of "fast " is subjective. What kind of cranking are you looking to do? I use a mh/mod for deep cranks in open water, MH/mod-fast for traps and mid depth cranks around grass and a med / fast for square bills around cover. 1 Quote
Matteo6317 Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Mostly square bills to medium diving cranks. I currently have a st croix mojo glass 7'4" crankster but looking to get rid of it and buy a 7' all around cranking rod for cranks stated above. Quote
Bruce424 Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I have a 6'6" mh bps crankin stick that i use for squarebills and I found that it's a very limber tip rod even for a medium heavy. Quote
Josh Smith Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Sometime take a look at the old MH/F fiberglass rods. I have yet to see one that matches today's idea of a "fast" action. Go with what feels good. Josh 1 Quote
LunkerFisher Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I have the mh crankshaft and I really like it for the 5 and 6 XDs, DT16s, and Spro Fat Papas. I use a chronarch 200E5 and it's a great setup for those 3/4-1oz cranks. Not quite parabolic action but waaaay more limber than an all-graphite fast action. Quote
long island basser Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I use M/F and a MH/F graphite rods for my shallow and mid cranking. 1 Quote
Josh Smith Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 How's that working out for you? Josh I use M/F and a MH/F graphite rods for my shallow and mid cranking. Quote
Matteo6317 Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 So I guess it boils down to fast action crankbait rods are different than fast action worm/jig rod? Still don't understand why they would call it a fast action if the bend was in the middle but I'm not gonna try and not overthink it. Thanks for your help Quote

primetime Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I use fast action for cranking and it works just fine....but one companies fast is another's medium etc...I usually just gravitate toward faster tip rods in general, I buy what feels good, the rods labeld Cranking Rods are often way to whippy for my liking but to each person they may have a different opinion....Fish what you like and you will be happy, just play the fish correctly with your drag set properly and you will be good imo with a fast tip... Josh Smith Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Awesome. The reason I asked was that I'm wanting to build a combo for squarbills and lipless cranks, and am going back and forth in my rod action/power decision between M/F and M/MF. Thanks, Josh I do the same..............it works quite well actually. I'll put my cranking results and exp. up against any one here. Quote

Thanks, Josh Josh the final decision will depend on the model as the definitions of fast and mod fast vary. between two rods in the same line id lean toward the mf Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 When you see a crankbait specific rod that is listed as a "Fast" action, it is due to the rod being either fiberglass or a composite of glass and graphite. A rep from Lamiglas explained it to me as the rod being fast for a glass rod, he said when S-Glass came on the scenbe it was faster in action than E-glass but it is still softer than a fast action graphite rod, it just tends to bend more on the upper end than other glass rods. 1 Quote
