After hearing great things I bought a spool of 8lb Tatsu for my spinning rigs (Dropshot/Finess/Lite to Med jigs/Shakey hd).  As everyone know this stuff is stupid expensive and my size 2500 reels will hold about 140 yds of the stuff.  The Tatsu comes in 200yd spools which means that about 30% will be wasted.

What about putting 100yds on 2 spools, using something like Big Game mono (I have 2 bulk spools of 8lb) as a backing?  To ensure an even spread between reels, what would your process look like?

TIA.

backing is common practice.

I always put backing on before fluoro because of how expensive it is. if you're comfortable with 65 yards on a reel instead of 100, you can get 3 out of a spool instead of 2.

Yeah, I only do about 60yds with no issues and get 3 reels out of a 200yd spool. I use the cheap Cajun line for backing.

I actually use 10# cheap braid for backing and only put about two rod lengths of flouro leader on.  Braid almost never has to be changed out, then that 200 yd spool will literally last FOREVER.  FOREVER...

Not so sure about putting only 65 yds on a reel! To have to figure in brake offs and before you know it you are at the knot of the backing! I would do 100 yds on a reel.

i'd try to spool up 3X with that 200 yd spool with mono backing, roughly 65 yards of the tatsu on each spool.

I only have 2 spinners that take 8llb test...lol  Great ideas everyone.  Thanks as always :)

I plan on using a mono backing for my braid reels, as well. Personally, I want to have enough braid to make it through a seasons worth of tying on lures and leaders, but use enough backing to make it actually worth it. I'll probably do 50/50 or so.

Braid and Fluoro are both too expensive for me to fill a reel with just them.  Heck, if putting 8# mono or co-polymer on a reel holding 120 yds. or more of mono, I'll lay down backing with cheap 12# mono I have on hand.  I can't see using 300 yds. of any line to fill a reel for bass fishing.  Total waste of line.  I'll split it among 3 reels.  Just spooled 10# Excalibur on a new reel.....after laying down a decent foundation of 12# Cajun.  Second reel I've topped off from the same 350 yd. spool of Excalibur.  Will get at least one more reel with it.  Highly doubt I will ever see the splice knot until ready to refill with new line.

When I fished fluoro a lot, I always put backing on to save money and line. No reason to have 150 yards of mainline on a reel when you're fishing for bass anyways.

Use Dacron instead. Sits on your spool better when you tightly wrap it and it's lighter.

What know do you use to connect the backing to the fluoro (or braid in my case)? I did it with a uni-uni knot since I'm most comfortable with it, but it's bulky. Idk if I'd wanna use it again.

Unito uni is what I used.

When using cheap mono for backing, does it matter if the mono is old? It's new mono, but it's an unused stren spool of new line that has been sitting in my basement for years. Thanks

Nope, it doesn't make any difference since the mono never leaves your spool.  People actually usually say to use old cheap mono just because you wouldn't ever actually use it as a main line anyways.
