Preytorien Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 With the soon arriving spring, we've all undoubtedly made several (many) purchases that will certainly mean more and bigger fish this coming year. What new gear have you procured this winter? Mine..... 1. Fishing kayak - Vibe Skipjack 90 - perfect size for me and has a good package of features for the price 2. Costa Caballito sunglesses in the 580G amber lenses 3. Livetarget Hollowbody Sunfish 4. Custom painted Duo Realis Spinbait 80 5. Shimano Sustain 2500 on a Shimano Crucial rod So....hurry up spring! Odd looking, and seems overly simple, but man those things catch fish. 1 Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I probably am in the running for the "spent too much money in the winter award". I got 5 new rods. 1) G Loomis NRX spinning rod 2) Dobyns Champion Extreme spinning rod 3) St Croix Avid X casting rod 4) Daiwa Zillion casting rod 5) Dobyns Fury 705CB 3 Daiwa Tatula 100 reels, a Fuego spinning reel, all the stuff for the NED rig, a box of Keitech swimbait supplies, crankbaits from Japan. Ugh...no wonder where all my money went. 39 minutes ago, Preytorien said: The Ned Rig won't let you down. Odd looking, and seems overly simple, but man those things catch fish. I'm anxious to try it. Are there certain types of days where the NED rig shines? I'm thinking maybe blue bird skies and flat water?? Quote

I really only find it tough to use when it's windy. I use it with a finesse spinning setup with very thin line, so wind doesn't play nice with it. But otherwise I'd use it about any time. One thing I'd say, is that the Ned Rig catches fish, all kinds and sizes. So you may have to wade through a lot of dinks to land a good one, but it makes for fun fishing, and it's better than getting skunked. I can't say I've tried it around heavy cover as I doubt it'd be effective in thick grasses, but on sparse flats and muck bottoms, it does great. 1 Quote

Big C Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 1.The "Gravy Boat" 2.Daiwa Fuego XS. I have used it for a couple months now, and still can't believe how fast an 8.1:1 reel is. 3.Daiwa J Braid. I'm interested to see how it compares to Power Pro while frogging. Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Tackle-wise I haven't really bought anything new, just replenished a few things. But... I did add a baitcasting combo! 1) G. Loomis NRX MBR 842C 2) Abu Garcia Revo LTX I actually got the rod in October and the reel in late December. I caught a couple smallies with the rod in October and some walleyes with the rod/reel in December. Can't wait to give it a real workout this spring!! Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 I had initially planned to get a new casting setup for 2016 this winter. Somehow, that turned into four: 7'2" M-M St. Croix Rage + Abu Silver Max 6'4" M-XF Fenwick Aetos + Lews LFS Speed Spool 6'10" MH-MF Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth + Lew's Tournament MB 6'9" MH-F Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth + *** *** In my defense, they were all discounted somehow, on closeout, discontinued, a sale, or I got some other kind of deal somewhere. Special thanks to TW, Cabela's, the St. Croix Bargain room, ManVenture Outpost, and MTB for making it all happen. 3 Quote

Hurricane Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Whopper plopper! Also looking forward to spooling my baitcasters up with suffix 832 braid. Always used spider wire, but after some advice here I went and bought some 832. Looking forward to getting the Canoe out too. Got a bed extender for Christmas for my Tacoma. Only used the canoe once last year. Brand new trolling motor also.. Living in Buffalo, I have a long ways till using all of it! Quote
TxHawgs Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 So far about $1200 worth of tackle. Loomis NRX green 895, 893, 853 Loomis GLX 802 Pre-ordered 4 2016 Shimano Mentaniums Placing a huge order of rods once my income tax check comes, but I'm starting off from only 2 rods and reels before I got these NRX and GLX rods. 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 I won't even go into tackle, but as far as reels and rods this winter... New Reels: Metanium 101 standard Stradic 3000 FK Stradic 2500 FJ Used Reels: Curado 51E (tricked out) Curado 200E5 Curado 301D Chronarch 51MG New Rods: Dobyns Fury 795SWB Abu Ike Series 7'2" MH-F Add in a Revo MGX that I bought and flipped as well... Now that I look at it, my reel to rod ratio is way off. I should probably fix that Quote
JustinU1X Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I needed a crankbait rod and of course when you give a mouse a cookie he needs milk as well so I bought a reel to go with it. This season I'm also looking to spend time fishing jerkbaits and jigs, two techniques I've never caught fish on. Okuma Helios TCS 7' crankbait/jerkbait Okuma Helios TCS 6.6:1 Spro McStick 110s Siebert Outdoor Brush Mata Jigs I'm excited for the jigs they look deadly w/ that Owner deep throat hook. Quote
hawgenvy Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I needed a crankbait rod too, and so just yesterday, on a whim, ordered from TW a Dobyns Champ XP 705 CB rod, and a Lew's Tournament Pro G Speed Spool reel to go with it. And Seaguar AbrazX 15 lb FC to wind on it, and a couple of LiveTarget Golden Shiner lipless crank baits to throw with it. All those goodies should come in Monday evening. Tuesday I'll wind line and tune. Wednesday I will cast and catch. That's the plan. I hope I will love the new set up. I hope my wife doesn't break it over my head. I do feel much better about just having spent $500 on gear after I saw all the new stuff you guys are buying! Quote
