Wingman87 Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Yes I'd also like to know how much more compact it is versus the original. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted March 3, 2016 Super User Posted March 3, 2016 Here's a side profile pic of the new vs old. Not my reel so I can't compare on actual feel. Just know someone with both and asked him for pics. Quote
DenhamBruce Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Looks basically the same to me, just with uglier colors haha. I'll just stick to my regular Type-R since the difference in width looks hardly noticeable... Oh who am I kidding, I'll probably try one out! Quote
Dreamchaser Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Seems slightly lower only - but i wonder how it feels in hand. By these photos it doesn't feel like it's significantly smaller. But thank you for pix. Quote
dam0007 Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 Does anyone know what the differences are between the CT and CT Type R? Bearings? Quote

The type R has a spool that's lighter and 2 corrosion resistant ball bearings. Which means nothing really if only fishing freshwater. Bearing count is the same. Purchase four 4x7x2.5 bearings for about $5 and add 1 to each knob and 2 to the worm shaft and you'll have yourself a 12 bearing reel. Not required but it's a cheap upgrade. Quote

I want to try one out! Im surprised they are cheap as hell on through the web like the regular tats were initially. Quote

How do the Alpha SV105 or Fuego compare? Seems like with the Tatula's now smaller in profile, people are comparing them with the more finese Daiwas? Welcome any thoughts as I'm on the look out for a new reel. I mostly bank fish and sometimes rent a boat in my local reservoirs here in North Cali. I have Dobyns rod exclusively, 2 cranks 704c/705c, 2 general purpose '4' power rods FR734/DX744. Welcome any recommendations. If you can swing the extra $$$ I say the SV105 over the Tat. You can get the SV105 closer to $200. lighter, better form, Made in Japan, casts lighter baits better. Takes a bit of use to start noticing the performance but its casting my ikas pretty far now. The weight saving and form is big enough difference to me for the extra price. I'd say it would compliment your Tat well. Quote
SenkoGuru Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 They have different drag stars too 13 hours ago, rippin-lips said: The type R has a spool that's lighter and 2 corrosion resistant ball bearings. Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 15, 2016 Super User Posted March 15, 2016 Hey!! I like the purple accents on my T3 MX. However, the purple on this new reel looks to have a lot of blue in it and is much lighter colored. Maybe Daiwa is starting to make it easier for us old farts with bad eyes to see the settings. Too bad the indicator isn't also highly visible. What good is seeing the numbers if you can't see the indicator to know where the brake setting is at? Tat vs Alphas SV....for me it currently is the Tat. Although I like the looks and ergonomics of the SV, its casting performance is a disappointment. However, I think I need to spend more time with it before considering sending it out. Has to be me. Maybe I'm trying to cast too hard. Everyone else has nothing but praise for the SV. Quote
Scarborough817 Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 ya i'll probably just wait for the old type r to go down in price and pick one of those up instead Quote

sarcazmo Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 Got my Type R. Haven't been able to fish it but it's noticeably narrower than the OG. That being said I wouldn't consider this platform compact. To me, as reference, Shimano 50 series are compact. This is still bigger than those reels. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted April 6, 2016 Super User Posted April 6, 2016 Just got mine yesterday and its slightly smaller than the first tatula model. Not a real big difference. Quote
KP Duty Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 I like the purple accents with the red...gives it flavor. Not having all the colors match can look good...look at the ito. Quote

I know I'm late to the party, but I use the Tatula and personally love the reel. I can pick them up new/returned for $88 bucks on Amazon if I'm diligent and I think it's a really great piece for that price. Granted I cannot afford retail or more expensive reels so it's an easy decision for me. Can I ask what your personal gripes are with the reel? Maybe I am missing something... Quote

I bought 3 of them this offseason too. I have no issues. Some people say they are big/heavy in terms of today's reels. They are smooth and cast a mile. For $90 I don't think you can get a much better reel. 1 Quote

I'll admit to not having a great amount of experience, but for the price, I think it would be very difficult to find something that compares. Somebody prove me wrong though! I'm always willing to try something new if the price/performance is there! Quote

If manventureoutpost ever gets more Pinnacle Primmus reels in, and sells them at the same $104.10 price, I think you would agree they are a better reel than the Tatula...original or new CT. Of course they do list for a lot more than the Tatula so they should be better. Personally I like the Primmus reels better than my Curado 51Es. Quote

You'll have to excuse me for being dense, but is manventureoutpost a forum member here that sells tackle? I'm new so not yet hip to the goings on around the forum! Thanks for the heads up on the reel tho! Quote

Short version: Tatulas are wide and such in order to accommodate The T-wing, which by Daiwa's own admission increases casting distance by up to 5%. So IMO, Daiwa made a big wide reel to make use of a technology gimmick that effectively does nothing. Then someone at Daiwa decided this cool thing that does nothing needed to be on more reels. Add the grooving shenanigans (which are hopefully done?) into the equation and you have my disappointment regarding more Tatulas. Of course they sell like hotcakes at $90 or whatever for the standard model so I'm fine with them existing; I like the idea of weekend anglers being able to purchase better quality gear and not be stuck with Crap Pro Shops. I've seen some YouTubers state that the wider opening provided by the TWS might not necessarily equate to great gains in casting distance, but could potentially provide some benefit when flipping/pitching with higher lb test flouro/mono lines due to less friction caused by the larger open are. Would you agree with this, or is it more anecdotal? Quote

I'm new so not yet hip to the goings on around the forum! Thanks for the heads up on the reel tho! It is an Online store. TW sells the Primmus Xi XS for $224.99. I got my last two from manventureoutpost for $104.10. I posted about the reels after purchasing. A fellow member gave a link to the same company, but with a price of $98.65. Oh well. I know I got a hellova bargain at the $104 price. These reels and the Optimus Xi XS are hand tuned at the factory. Just great reels. Haven't an Optimus yet, but will when I can find one at a good price. Quote
