RedHeadAngler Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Today I was spooling some 50lb spiderwire stealth on to one of my reels and I noticed some of the green dye came of on my fingers where I was pinching the line. If I simply pinch it and pull it through my fingers a little comes off. Is this normal? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 16, 2016 Super User Posted February 16, 2016 Yes. Some braids will lose there color faster than others, but most of them all will. Quote

I might add, from experience, You need to spool braid with tension, it needs to be tight on the spool. I use canvas gloves with the braid intertwined between a couple of fingers. You can also use a damp rag of some sort. Pinching it between your fingers isn't going to be tight enough,.wind knots are in your future if you don't get the line packed tight enough. Quote

I have read this before, but I discount it as not exactly true from my experience. Unless after you cast the lure each time you grab your damp rag of some sort or canvas gloves and do the same exact process as you retrieve your bait. Otherwise guess what the next cast it is just like you never did it to start with. Yes you don't want the line limp on the reel but every stinking inch of it doesn't have to be like a banjo string. It wont stay that snug even if you do initially put it on that tight. I use braid mostly and get color on my hands as well with new line mainly. It quits doing it as bad as time goes by. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 17, 2016 Super User Posted February 17, 2016 FULL SPOOL--You definitely want the base of the braid on TIGHT. This will help prevent digging issues later on. Yes the top portion that you cast out will loosen up after casting but the base/remainder of the line will still be tight. You wont be digging into the base material easily. If you finger tight a full spool of braid a good hookset will bury the line in itself much deeper than a TIGHT base. PARTIAL SPOOL w/BACKING--If you use only a topping of braid to begin with say 150' or so this wont matter much, getting braid tight, but the backing material filler should be put on very tight as well. 1 Quote
kcdinkerz Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Wait till your buddies ask why you have a green line on your lips Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 17, 2016 Super User Posted February 17, 2016 Yes that is normal. As time goes by the line will fade as well. If I remember correctly, Stealth seems to come off rather quickly. A permanent marker run over the last foot or so of line should fix the issue though. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 17, 2016 Super User Posted February 17, 2016 No dye issues with Fins braid. Tom Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted February 17, 2016 Super User Posted February 17, 2016 Just use white. No mess, no fuss. 1 Quote
primetime Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 It happens....After using braid for a while it all loses color, which does not bother me personally, but I usually flip it after half a year and the bottom stuff should be fresh color if that is important to you..Sometimes I like a white braid....Easy to see. Super User buzzed bait Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 happens, but also had a spool of the spiderwire once and it seemed to come off quite a bit more than others while spooling. also found that power pro hi vis yellow comes off quite a bit more than the green Quote
MIbassangler30 Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I used Spiderwire for a half of a season... never again. That stuff is junk. I haven't used every brand out there, but I can vouch for Power Pro (my on deck hitter). I can definitely vouch for Sunline FX2 (my clean up hitter). These lines are much more durable and manageable. I used my left over Spiderwire to hang Christmas decorations and ornaments during the holidays, so it wasn't a total waste. Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 A fat black Sharpie will take care of that soon to be light green braid, just another thing to keep handy. I just spooled up some Power Pro Hi Vis yellow today, so thanks buzzed bait for the heads up. Surprisingly, I've found Suffix braid holds its color (green) longer than Power Pro or Daiwa Samurai. Has anyone else found this to be true or found a brand of line that doesn't fade after a few fishing trips? Quote
