RedHeadAngler Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 I got some 50 lb braid for my flipping rod and I'm trying to decide what lb line I should put on my 7' MH setup. Would 50 lb with a leader be ok for it too or should I go with something lighter. Quote

If you want to use braid I would use 30 lb or I would us 17 lb co poly. -Payton Quote
tomb0_ Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 30 lb oughtta be enough. If you're worried about a lower # test "digging in", try Spiderwire stealth braid. It has a color-holding coating that increases the line diameter very slightly and provides a little insurance from digging in. Quote

You may be able to get away with it, but on a MH rod I typically try to keep it around 30lb test if I'm using braid Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 15, 2016 Super User Posted February 15, 2016 I use 50 on my flipping and frog rods, 30 on my MH's, and 10 on spinning. K.I.S.S. Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted February 15, 2016 Super User Posted February 15, 2016 I mostly have thrown 50lb PP on my medium heavy setups, especially when cranking through reeds and other heavy cover. For deep divers I tend to throw 30lb 832, but not having a lot of good sticks or deck space I have also used the 50lb PP with deep divers with no issues. Like farmer though I throw 10 lb fireline on my spinning rods, and that is what I use for most of my plastic fishing. Swim jigs are MH with the 50lb braid. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 15, 2016 Super User Posted February 15, 2016 The 50 will work just fine, no need to go out and buy more line if you don't really need to. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 15, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 15, 2016 Don't know what kind of water you normally flip in but 50# would concern me a little If you were flipping into heavy matted areas, for that it's 65# min. I have friends who won't go below 80# but that's them, I'm me and you're you. IMHO Let your water be your guide. ..Heavy, thick matted weeds and debri...65# min / scattered heavy vegetation with pockets of open water...50# min / submerged emergent grass...30# min. Spinning reel 20# max. Mike Quote
