Super User scaleface Posted February 15, 2016 Super User Posted February 15, 2016 I love carp fishing . Here is my number one method . I chum the area with a can or two of whole kernel corn . I mean spread it out , get those fish eating . I use my bass flipping rods with baitcasters and 15 lb Trilene Big Game and a big heavy one ounce weight , carolina rigged with a 1 to 2 foot leader . I then use a small octopuss hook and add two to three pieces of fat whole kernel corn . I usually use a short cast and put the rods in a holder that will not allow the fish to pull it in . Tighten the string to where there is no slack. Heres what happens. A carp comes up to it and it has already been eating corn . The fish inhales it and feels resistance from the heavy weight and tight line . He freaks and bolts , thus hooking himself in the process . Your pole will lay flat , it looks like your going to lose it . Man thats a lot of fun . I do it a lot in the summer . 1 Quote
Fishin Ethan Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 For grass carp I would recommed using a size 5 or 4 offset hook. For your bait I would have the bait on the hook wieght less. Then for bait I would either use bread or corn. (cernals of corn (frozen corn works fine)) If you are using corn let it sink to the bottom. If using bread you can either let the bread set flat on top of the water. Or you can make the bread more compact and let it sink to the bottom. Carp are very careful for what they bite and they are aware of their surroundings. Don't walk up to the bank and start casting if you do that you can scare carp and they will distrub the surroundings. Do not make a lot of noise either. I have found some rare occurneces with carp in clear water were I have looked them in the eye and they dart off. I use bait casters and find them to work just fine. Once you cast your bait out with your bait caster, I would leave the bail open. By leaving the bail open it allows you to really sense when the carp bite and take the bait. When the carp takes your bait wait your going to want the carp to inhale the bait. With the bail open you can see the line being pulled and after a few seconds set the hook and fight the carp. This is not Bass Fishing so you don't have to have your rod and reel in your hand. It is fine if you just lay your rod on the ground with the bait in the water and bail open. Major Key (DJ Khaled)- If you lose a carp in one area of the water, immeditaly leave that area. If you are fighting a carp and you lose it, it scares the rest of the carp surronding. If you lose a carp it will spook the surronding carp and basically ruin the area for the day. Be patient carp tend to be picky but the good thing about carp is that they don't care about the time of day and will bite at any time. For locating carp in clear water you can sight fish. If the water is dark I would chum the area up by either throwing corn or bread were you are going to cast. And I would have multiple rods out in the water if your tornument allows you to do so. Remember be paitent and quiet for these carp to bite. But when the carp bite you should be in for a great fight. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 15, 2016 Super User Posted February 15, 2016 I snagged a 23 pound carp down by the tail.I thought he was going to drain the spool on my reel. And it was a big saltwater spinning reel.I have chummed and caught them with big bread balls in other ponds but they seem uninterested in my lake. MassBass Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 I like a good bait-runner reel, set in a rod holder. Will you be fishing a river? Quote

nascar2428 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 You tube is a great starting place. I would recommend using a spinning set up. Although corn is great in catching carp, I would imagine that you are going to see a lot of different carp specific baits being used. This will probably be an eye opening experience for you. Enjoy it and have fun!! Quote
