Super User roadwarrior Posted February 13, 2016 Super User Posted February 13, 2016 I don't know how a city finds itself in such a pickle, but it takes years to screw up this much. Memphis is short 400 officers. That's not "staff', it's boots on the ground! How is that possible? To put the number in perspective, the rookie class is around 60 recruits and not all of them will make the cut. That number is insufficient to simple replace retiring officers and those leaving the department. If you are qualified and interested in a career in law enforcement, there are immediate openings here. I think it's time for the State of Tennessee to take control of the city government. Maybe Nashville can save this town. Quote

68camaro Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Pretty amazing isn't it, police presence in community is proven to be a deterrent and very positive. Unfortunate for those in Memphis, probably need to vote the existing bums out and get people elected that are committed to safety. 1 Quote

Super User J._Bricker Posted February 13, 2016 Super User Posted February 13, 2016 Unfortunately RW, it's a national issue which every agency is forced to deal with and the reasons are varied. Without going into some of the reasons, I'd like to wish the city of Memphis well with their recruitment efforts Quote

VolFan Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Memphis has a long history of corruption and mismanagement of public funds. Combine that with a growing lack of motivation for people to get into law enforcement, and this is where you end up. I grew up there, and I hope they get back on track. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 I was in memphis a few weeks the area i was in was nice...btw wth is that smell when you are near the missisippi ?? Smelled like mud and crawdads the whole time i was there Quote
VolFan Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 That's the Big Muddy. Must have the wind wrong. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 Wow, that is ridiculous. It would be one thing if the town was down on physicians or other professions that have to "come to them" but it's something else entirely when they get to choose and train their own. Hopefully they get things figured out in a hurry or what is left of their best of the best will burnout and leave for more stable departments in the surrounding communities. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted February 19, 2016 Super User Posted February 19, 2016 they average about $57K in salary..... would you want to patrol that city for that? Quote

Buckeye Ron Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 The show "48 Hours" features Memphis quite a bit for not very good reasons. I always wonder though if things are as bad as they are sometimes portrayed. Living in a tiny town like I do is a pretty sheltered life. Quote

Obviously it didn't happen over night, but sometimes it seems as though the system is broken to the point where it makes the Wild West look like a church social. The infestation of drugs and the greed of many has ruined many of our great cities, and like someone already said why would anyone go into law enforcement nowadays? Law enforcement,EMT's,these people have my utmost respect for doing a job I could never do,especially in a city where murder has become commonplace. Quote
quanjig Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Our nations capital has the same problem, not sure how many they were "short" but I think the went looking out of town to look to fill positions. Even then, they said it would take quite some time before the rookies would be able to do patrols on their own!! It's a tough situation everywhere. There are plenty of places I refuse to go downtown, even if they are just a few blocks away from million dollar condos!! 1 Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted February 23, 2016 Super User Posted February 23, 2016 Criminals have more rights then victims that is the problem. When the menace to society have no respect for LA we as a society are sitting ducks..think about it when a ppl will just walk up to a police officer/officers that they know are armed and engage them in deadly force .us peasants dont stand a chance... What i find funny and ignorant at the same time is the same ppl out here that think we should not be able to protect our own..have fire extinquishers and carbonmonoxide detectors,,and use seat belts.logic would say why use and have them when we have fire departments and emts for our car crashes and house fires.. I resemble that remark! Ive been an LEO for almost 11 years and I love my job. We have agencies locally that have a hard time recruiting and its usually related to people not wanting to work for those agencies due to leadership philosophy and pay. I work for an agency that offers good training, opportunity to be involved in niche areas like drug enforcement, gangs, street crimes, etc. Another issue is standards. We often hire young recruits out of college who haven't been anywhere or done anything. They dont put what they see on the job in context with life experience. But, they can pass a polygraph because they've never done anything unfavorable. Lots of great candidates are eliminated because of small issues from their past and most isn't even criminal. But, they would be great officers because they've seen the dark side and aren't naive about it. 2 Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted February 23, 2016 Super User Posted February 23, 2016 Ignorance is on the rise boys and girls and this planet sucks more and more every day. Our police, our firemen, and our military aren't safe in their own homes. It's disgusting. I have friends in all 3 fields, all better men and women than myself yet they are the ones constantly having to watch over their shoulder and have action plans with their families for emergency situations... makes me sick. My family prays for these men and women every night. It's a sick world and it's only going to get worse I'm afraid. GJM 1 Quote
