VABasser Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I fish a lot of weedy areas, and one bait I've gotten away from throwing as much is a buzz frog (Horny Toad, Rage Toad, etc.). Having to run the trolling motor to cut through the grass in shallow water, I feel like it's important to take long casts to reach fish that aren't spooked by the noise you're making cutting through everything. I never get a lot of distance with a toad, and so my confidence in it is diminished. I know you can use a keel weighted hook to add more weight. It definitely works but sometimes it causes me to have to retrieve the frog faster than I normally would to keep it on top. Anybody have recommendations for a brand of toad that is naturally heavier, or floats, or any other tricks to getting more casting distance from a buzz frog? Quote
Airman4754 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I use the Z-Man ones, they are Elaztech. The 4" models will float a 1/8 bullet weight and the 6" popper model will float a 1/4 bullet, but you lose the popping ability for the most part. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted February 13, 2016 Super User Posted February 13, 2016 When I need more weight for other weightless soft plastics , I will tie on a heavy wire flipping hook . Dont know if that is a viable option on a "buzz frog " . Quote
lectricbassman Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Stanley top toad, nice and hefty, floats and makes quite a bit of noise. 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 13, 2016 Super User Posted February 13, 2016 If distance alone is your biggest concern it may be best to opt for a heavier hollow body frog? I use the Zoom Horny Toads and feel like my distance is quite good. Braid may help too some for distance if you aren't using it already. I throw my Toads on a Dobyns 734 Savvy rod. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 13, 2016 Super User Posted February 13, 2016 If you aren't getting good distance /w a horny toad or rage toad, look at your set up. I throw them on my frog rod (Dobyns 735) or a Dobyns 734 if both are working. Both cast a long way /w a screw lock 6/0? (might be 5) hook /w no weight added. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted February 14, 2016 Super User Posted February 14, 2016 The bait you are using has sufficient weight to cast it a country mile. My humble opinion in this situation is you may have to evaluate your reel settings. Assuming you are using a MH to H rod with a X-fast tip. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 14, 2016 Super User Posted February 14, 2016 Stanley makes a "double" hook with a weight on the bottom. When used with the ribbit, it lands belly down every time, and cast's like a champ. Quote
