ClayBuster Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I searched for previous posts regarding these hooks and was unable to find any information, so forgive me if this has previously been covered. I recently saw that Bass Pro will have their XPS hooks on sale during the Spring Classic and I'm considering buying a decent amount. But before I stock up on a ton of XPS hooks, I was hoping to hear some feedback from some people that may have used them. Are they quality hooks? Sharp? Durable? As a point of reference, I typically use Gamakatsu hooks, so I am looking for something of similar quality. I would really appreciate any feedback you guys may have. Hope you all have a good day. Super User Darren. Posted February 10, 2016 Super User Posted February 10, 2016 I have some and have used some, and for the price they are decent, but in my experience, not great. I've also had XPS hooks break on me, but never a Gamakatsu. Pretty much settled on Gammy hooks for my use. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted February 10, 2016 Super User Posted February 10, 2016 Take it from one of the bigger cheapskates on BR: Steer clear of BPS hooks. NOT worth the savings....unless you like dull, rusty, fragile, bendy hooks, that is Quote
ClayBuster Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Awesome, thanks guys. Saving a couple bucks definitely isn't worth the trouble and lost fish. Quote
DaveT63 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Go to that auction site and buy Gammy or Owner in bulk. You can often find packs of 25-28 hooks for considerably cheaper than retail. Quote
backcast88 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Trokar, Eagle Claw, and VMC hooks are also on sale during the SFC. I'd look at those hooks before I purchased BPS hooks. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 10, 2016 Super User Posted February 10, 2016 I've used them with marginal results. Their beefier EWG hooks were fine, I had some other ones though that weren't that sharp. I don't remember if they were XPS or just regular Bass Pro Brand. You might want to look at the pack as I believe some of their styles have other brand hooks in them. For instance, I know I bought some of their vertical drop hooks, and the hooks were Gamakatsu. With current sales out there though, I think you could do better. (IE Trokars are 50% off...that's where I'd be putting my hook budget) Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 11, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 11, 2016 I did okay with the EWG worm hooks. I've had much better success with the H2O worm hooks though. Now Wal-Mart carries the Jason Christie Signature Series worm hooks that I've really had good luck with that are my "bargain", hook option. Quote
DCales84 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I bought two packs of 3/0 and 4/0 standard EWG XPS hooks last season while they were on sale. For the price they work.... not great by any means. Make sure to keep a hook sharpener handy if you buy some. Overall I used them for thinner baits and they worked just fine. Quote
lo n slo Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 never compromise regarding hooks. for me, it's Gamakatsu. 1 Quote
ClayBuster Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the responses. Sounds like I'll be steering clear of the XPS hooks and stocking up on Trokar and Gamakatsu hooks 2 Quote
