Brez1623 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I am looking to get a new drop shot rod and looking for some advice from anyone who has the following rods. I am deciding between the Dobyns champion extreme hp 702sf and the Megabass orochi xx stinger shot or medium light drop shot. I will be using 7 lb fluoro and 1/8 - 1/4 oz drop shot weights .Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated. Quote
fisherrw Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I'd get neither instead I'd get a Phenix K2 since price doesn't seem to be a problem here. They are the best spinning rods made. Pair with a shimano Stella or substain and you got your self the best combo around Quote
ncbass Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I have the DX 702 and think it is the best drop shot rod I have ever used. Paired with a Ci4 2500 feels like a feather and the most sensitive rod I have ever fished with. Quote
sprint61 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Don't know if your dead set on those two brands, if not I would go with a kistler or alx rod. Quote
Molay1292 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I love these kind of threads, so far we have Kistler, K2, and ALX, I wonder how many more before it's finished. Quote
Cgrinder Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 You'll probably be happier with the Dobyns unless you're into the idea of the solid tip on the Stinger Shot. Quote
Logan S Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I'll vote for the XX. I have several and think they compare very well to rods at higher price points. I haven't used Dobyns personally, but many people have evaluated the Megabass XX and Dobyns DX to be very close in performance. Given that the XX is significantly cheaper, I think it's a good choice. I can tell you that my XX rods compare very closely with my Legend Elites, I think the LE has a slight edge but it's also over $100 more expensive. IMO, the Megabass XX series is the best value out there in the higher price brackets. One thing's for sure, you can't make a bad choice between those two. Quote
Brez1623 Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Thanks for the comments so far everyone. Can anyone describe the solid tip on the stinger shot? I live in Minnesota so I don't have a good way of seeing one of these rods in person. Overall I am leaning towards the Dobyns so far based on comments and research I've done. Also not sure how saying your willing to buy a Dobyns ($350 retail) turns into someone making a comment how money is not a problem. And you should just buy a $1200 dollar combo. I would love that combo but no way I have that kind of money to spend. Just looking to get the best I can with what I saved up. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 10, 2016 Super User Posted February 10, 2016 Isn't there a bass pro shops in Minneapolis? Bps sells xx rods, they might have one in stock there Quote
faygo1979 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 They don't sell XX rods in their Michigan location. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted February 10, 2016 Super User Posted February 10, 2016 It's tough to beat the xx for the money. Contact The Tackle Trap for any questions on Megabass rods. Brian can help you out. The also sell off demos and rep samples from time to time and they might have one that's a bit discounted. Quote

Rossford, OH used to carry them though if you feel like a trip down 75. OP, totally ring the Tackle Trap if you need XX rod information. The selling point of the Dobyns (tip aside) would be that you can probably get one for 20% off somewhere before your lakes unfreeze. The XX Shakeyhead rod could be another one to consider. Quote
