Treble Hooks

I am about to be replacing allot of my stock crank bait hooks and was just wanting to know what the more common size and bend of trebles people use??

#4 and #6 trebles will take care of about 80% of bass crankbaits.  Large deep divers usually mount #2 trebles.  Cranks under 2" in size often use #8 trebles.  My go-to treble is the Gamakatsu Round Bend.  Widely available, sharp, and they have good temper so won't bend out.  The general strategy is to mount the largest trebles on a bait that won't foul each other.  Some guys like short shank treble hooks like the Mustad KVD or the VMC short shank hooks in order to upsize their hooks without fouling.

Depends on the bait and each angler has their own way of going about it.

Here's mine - replace suspending baits / balance sensitive with same size & design.

 ~ Replace lippless, squarebills as well as Shallow, mid & deep cranks with one size up EWG's - 1x strong 2x short (shank)

 ~ Replace topwaters with one size up EWG's short shank but use standard gauge trebles.

I like round bend hooks for most baits with lipless cranks being the exception.  They get Triple Grips. Check sites that offer bulk quantities. Purchasing individual packs can get pricey when replacing a lot of hooks.  You may also want to consider replacing the split rings while you're at it.

I use mostly #8, #6, #4, and #2, with #6 and #4 being the most common. I use mainly Owner ST36 round bend trebles but also have quite a few Eagle Claw Fletcher Shryock signature series triple grip style trebles on my squarebills. I generally use the round bends for baits that fish like to slap at (topwater, jerkbaits, coldwater cranks), and the triple grip hooks for baits they like to inhale like squarebills and traps.

Pretty much the same for me except I opt for the cheaper VMC hooks. I don't fish tournaments or anything and I've never had a problem with them actually bending out on a fish, even though they can and will bend if you tried. One thing I have learned is that when your lure gets snagged you're gonna wish you had some hooks that could bend out. I will admit Gamakatsu's are top notch, though.

I do prefer the Round Bend style hooks over just about anything else, including lipless cranks. But if they already come with EWG style hooks I will leave those on.

Papajoe- Do you know of any good sites that I can buy in bulk from? TW is sold out of the Owners I was looking at.

Unfortunately, it's a limited brand selection (no Owner) but Fortunately they do offer Mustad - my treble of choice ~

Definitely cost effective when buying in bulk as compared to smaller packs.

First thing i do to all my cranks is replace the front line tie ring to an oval one.  I save the round ones for replacing bad ones one hooks.

Other than that i often just replace the rear hook to a short shank a size larger than stock.

Check out bulk treble hooks on eBay, or Amazon, unless your local WalMart carries bulk packages.

I switched all of my crank baits and jerk baits with a red treble on the front of the bait. Gives the bait a look of bleeding under the gills while underwater. That is a Randy Howell tip from the Webinar a couple of weeks ago.

Exactly how I do mine and have perfect luck so far. Now you’re gonna miss one here and there that’s fishing. But the hookup ratio I’d compare to any and you got money left in your pocket

I am largely in the Ajay camp but find myself using the #5 as a great compromise when deciding between size 4 and 6.

I use the Owner Stinger hooks for crankbaits and the Nano Finesse hooks from Gamakatsu.   I have also used the Berkeley Fusion trebles.  They too worked well.
