So guys I have always wondered what stops some of you guys from fishing on certain days. Like if the weather is somewhat not to great, some people wont even hit the water nor even look at it. Maybe just on someday's you just don't fish because it was just a Monday. The main thing that stops me from fishing sometimes is the wind. No not because of casting or the pick up in the currents. It's because the wind causes me to get severe migraines, the pain is so impulsive. So in that case I usually wont fish on a windy day, and if I do I'm usually wearing a hat with a hoodie just to protect my head from the pressure of the winds. So in that case, tell me what stops you guys from hitting the water.

I don't get to fish nearly as much as I like so nothing, almost literally nothing, stops me. My buddy and I have fished numerous hurricanes, snow storms, cold, hot...you name it. I completely understand the migraine thing though.

Dedicated or stupid...not sure which one yet; depends on who you ask I guess. And I'm not saying that I'd miss my son's graduation or something like that to fish. Just saying that weather, injury, sickness, "not feelin it" are all out of the question if it's a day that I can go, I go.

Wow...I was just going to say my wife...but you beat me to it...lol

After that, the wind would be the next reason for me to keep the boat on-shore.

Yesterday we had white-caps in the river...but I still fished from the dock for a while...listening to the fishing line whistle in the wind.

Like the OP, wind keeps me off. The wind today was 15-25 and no way I could have stayed on the lake, couldn't hardly walk outside.

Lightning is the only weather that will turn me around once I'm headed out. If I'm on the water I'll get off, or at least dock the boat and wait it out in the car.  Wind has dampened a few outings in recent memory (remember, I'm an old fart so memory is a passing thing), but it never kept me from at least giving it a shot.

@okiangler do you take medication for your migraines? I get severe aura migraines that cause numbness in my extremities (usually my left hand/arm), temporary blindness (left eye, always), nausea and eventually vomiting. It's completely debilitating when I get one and sleep is the only thing that sort of makes it better. The last couple years I've been taking medication for it and went from getting 2 or 3 a month to getting 2 or 3 a year.

Wife and kids first, then comes the temperature. Wind and weather is something I adapt to.  If it's too windy to fish from a boat, I will go to a pond and fish from the bank.

 Being outside is an addiction for me.  My wife LOVES golfing so I go with her when she is not golfing with friends.  Usually one day a week.  When I came down with acute pancreatitus the pain kept me on the couch curled up for several months.  But thanks to the good Lord I was slowly able to get out with the help of friends and neighbors and pain killers.  For awhile I couldn't even get up to go look at tackle...."what a ride"  Now I'm able to go mostly all day and weather is not usually an option...or even honey do's.  My wife is awesome.  Oh .. yeah...occasional trips to ER and a day or two recovery have slowed me down on occasion.

Lightening is about the only thing that generally keeps me off the water. To high of a risk being out in it with lightening rods is your hands. Last thing you want to be is the high point holding something that conducts electricity.

I had my bicep reattached two years ago and lost three months of fishing . Three years ago I had major surgery to remove some cancer and lost three more months .  

 

When fishing from small craft { canoe , 14 ft jon boat ...] I dont fish in ten mph or greater winds . I have to avoid extreme heat now days . So I watch the weather channel and try to pick the very best days to go . Night fishing trips are becoming more frequent .

Normally my only available fishing days are Saturday and/or Sunday and the only thing that keeps me from fishing (other than family obligations) is if the river is flooding and unfishable.  I haven't been out since January 17th because of our 36" of snow and subsequent flooding when it melted, but this Sunday is looking pretty good.  YAY!!!

Main thing keeping me off the most is budget.  Seems i either have time or money, rarely both. 

Higher winds will keep me off as well. I have an older boat that does not handle whitecaps very well and its not worth the beating it and i take in those conditions.  Winter i fish more in ponds than in the boat because i can usually find fish without the bone chilling ride down the lake.  

I also do not fish midday in the summers. The heat, sun, and humidity are no joke around here in alabama.  I am learning early from older guys i know who fished alot and am taking precautionary steps to avoid the melonoma and sunspots they currently deal with from too many years fishing all day in just a pair of shorts. I try to cover as much skin as possible with upf gear rated 30 and up, most of my shirts are upf50. Wide brim hat, glasses, and sungaiter as well.

wind, but if you fish in a kayak you know how miserable that can be.  if it's windy, i'll hit the ponds.

and as a lifelong migraine sufferer i can cope, but have been nearly headache free for a year now after my neurologist put me on a daily dose!  still get them, but went from weekly migraine to i think maybe 3 of them in the last year!!!!!  see yo doc!!

Apparently it takes about 25" of snow to keep me off the water. I fished at least once a week all of 2015. The only thing that stopped me  this year was the big snow storm we got two weekends back.

I watch the weather like a hawk and pick locations accordingly. High winds, fish wind protected waters. Potential for lightning, don't range too far from where I launched. Everything iced up, hit the warm water discharge areas.

I had an hour to kill on Saturday and went to throw some casts from the boat ramp.....What stopped me, was all the hard water within 50 yards of the ramp.  Sad day...

living in new england only ice I cant break thru, ( and yes,Ive broke thru ice backin in at the ramp to get to open water), or lightning keeps me from fishing,... i have 2 herniated discs and they dont even stop me when they are acting up. I figure i can be in pain in bed, or on the water,...i choose the water

After being diagnosed with cancer last may, my own self pity kept me off the water.  Now that I'm past some of my treatment, I fish whenever it doesn't get in the way of family.  Here in CA we don't have a lot of harsh weather, some may say we don't have weather at all but if i plan a day to fish, heat, rain or bad reports won't keep me off the water.

Personal commitments, lightning, too much wind.  I've got one of the little 2 man "pelican" type boats and that thing is hard to deal with in the wind.  ALTHOUGH.....I was on the lake last year and the wind picked up so I fought my way back to the ramp and loaded up.  As I looked out across the lake I noticed an older fella in a small jon boat tie off to a tree and keep right on fishing.  It irritated me that I hadn't thought of that...lol.  An obvious solution that my pea brain just didn't think of.

 

Ps......a Rat-L-Trap treble hook buried to the hilt in my finger also tends to take me off the lake
