Aaron_H Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 I hate them. So much. Culled seven more of these from the pond today, makes the tally 92 culled for 2022. Still haven't put a dent in their population, and I probably never will. I had a couple of them on that put up a very strong fight with several hard runs and big head-shakes, but most of them fought about as well as a plastic bag full of water. All seven today caught on the 3/4 oz Thunderhawk Sergeant lipless in gold/black. 10 Quote

These ponds are fed directly from road drainage and the water is generally not safe to eat from, otherwise I would at least clean them and give them away to people who do like tilapia. I feel wasteful culling them like this, but FWC does not allow them to be released alive. 2 Quote
Aaron_H Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 Sometimes I catch catfish, too. For the last year or so I've been feeding the bluegill and shiners out behind the house, and a few weeks ago I started seeing a group of half a dozen or so channel cats coming in to feed, as well. I've caught a couple of them, but this is the biggest so far. Still small for a channel cat, but I'll take it. Weighed in at 5lb 7oz. Caught on that Lew's Laser TXS spincast combo I picked up at Academy a few weeks ago. Spooled with 6lb mono, using a 1/16 oz jighead with a junebug/chartruese shadpole CT. Buried me up in the grass several times and peeled a bunch of drag, but it was no problem for that combo. I originally only bought it because I wanted a new panfish rod (and to eventually mess around with some BFS stuff) and because the reel was LH compatible and not held together with a plastic pin like the newer Zebco 33 models. It's not buttery smooth, but it's not a coffee grinder, either. For 50 bucks I'm very happy with it so far, and would gladly recommend it to anyone interested in this type of platform. 12 Quote

If I was hard up for money and starving then yeah the bass better be scared. But for me like I said normally bass fishing is solving a puzzle. If I was fishing for subsistence then I'd bottom fish with worms or cut bait and would eat whatever I catch. That's a much more economical way to do it. Quote

Super User T-Billy Posted November 9, 2022 Super User Posted November 9, 2022 Roll Tide!!! I got off to a good start this morning on the Bama Rig. Caught two musky, had one come off, and three follows that wouldn't commit. First one was a 39" that hit on the figure 8. Whole buncha fun on a few feet of line. Second was a fat 45" that absolutely SMOKED it clear out at the end of the cast. Put on a great show. Tail walked twice. Just an inch short of my PB, and beautifully marked. Angry Musky + A-Rig + Net = TRAIN WRECK!!! Musky bite shut down once the sun got high, but the laydowns were full of LM. No bigguns but a bunch of these guys. Didn't keep count but a couple dozen or so. High 30's to start, but light winds and lotsa sunshine. Mid 60's by noon. Gorgeous day on the water. Goin back tomorrow. My days off next week are forecast for lows in the 20's and highs around 40. Fur hat weather for sure!!! ? 19 Quote

Couple inches of rain coming Friday, then our unseasonably mild temps are gonna crash. I'm off Tues - Fri next week. I'll be spending a bunch of time with the rig in my hands. Man that thing is addictive. I caught several LM on it yesterday on windblown rip rap, then those musky today. You're comment recently about retrieving it at a speed where it kinda floats stuck in my head, and though it's only two trips (small sample size) it's working for me, with most bites coming right after a HARD crank. 1 Quote
