Yup. Around here they're also called barfish. Academy even offers the shad colored crankbait I used to catch him in barfish coloration. Actually have a few of 'em myself. KVD apparently likes the SK version of barfish for some lakes like Toledo Bend.

This little guy lived to fight another day. His larger brethren get filleted for fish tacos. They do have a small section of darker meet along the rib area that some people say they don't like but fried fish is fried fish to me ??

Took my bow with me for the first time in a long time Sunday to the local lake that is way overpopulated with carp, to the point that they're stunted at about 3-4 pounds. Didn't do much good fishing so I slung a few arrows around. Took a couple tries to get my aim back down, but I remembered how pretty quick.

My Nana who lives in Ohio has managed to catch like three combos in the past five years while catfishing. I don't know how she does it, but I wish she would teach me.

They are delicious. Several lakes by where my parents live that are full of them. Tasty plus no size limit or quantity limit...keep 100 if you want to keep that many.

Me and a buddy drove up one day several years ago and got on a crapload of smaller end eaters...like 7-9 inchers. We kept like 76 or some dumb thing.

Oh and speaking of other species...I caught like 6-7 gar this morning while cat fishing... Couldn't keep them off my shad. I did manage 3 kitty's as well..a little 12 incher and 2 eaters in that 2.5-3lb range. Although not an other species I also caught 5 largemouth biggest around 3lbs. Good 2 hours I'd say.

I thought I had post this in this thread before but I haven't.  Not exactly "latest" catch.  I caught this Flathead back in April on a square bill crankbait.  It was 45 inches long, 34 inches girth.   I had moved the boat from one point to the next and went a little too far.  I saw what I thought was a log on my side view.  I cast out behind the boat thinking their may be a bass behind the log.   I thought I had got hooked on the log, and then it took off.   I followed it into the wind for over 30 minutes to keep it from taking all my line.  (12 pound mono)   I got it up to the boat 3 times before it was tired enough for me to land it.   Many bass fisherman don't like catching other species.  I enjoyed this one.  It's by far the biggest fish I've ever caught.  I released it after measuring it, and attempting to weigh it.  My 50 pound digital scale read ER.

I had an epic morning with my Father muskie fishing.  We caught three of them, all sizable tiger muskies, in about an hour span.  It was the first muskie my Father had caught since 2006.

After he caught the first one, 20 minutes later I hooked into one that felt like I snagged a submarine.  As it got closer, we got a good look at it when it surfaced, and it was significantly bigger than any of the ones we had caught today.  The biggest fish I have ever caught is a 44 inch pure strain muskie; this honestly looked bigger.  My best guess would be a 45+ inch tiger muskie.  When it came up and shook its head, the lure came out.  I caught a 41 incher two years ago that I had a replica made for and this appeared much bigger.

My Father and I had a bit of a rough patch earlier in the season...catching muskies together really seemed to smooth it over today.  We high fived and laughed and had a great time fishing together, and it's something neither of us will forget for many years.

My dad and I kept them that way fishing crack-of-dawn jumps on Lake LBJ when I was a teenager.

I bought my first fly rod for white bass at 16.

I've given a talk on Fly Rod White Bass several times, can find and catch them in the river when most people don't know they're still there.

OTtipfw.jpg

The photo above was a wet year, and 5 miles upriver from the story below.

My absolute best dues-paid day came from a good call watching the weather, and a 3-mi bust down from the parking.  The "sunken" low water bridge was exposed from the low lake level - the entire lake was sitting in front of me on a flagstone table and trying to get up the single riffle running through the bridge.  White bass were spawning at my feet on the gravel bar I was wading.

I caught 50 on consecutive casts, slow, crawling bottom bounce on cats whisker and Teeny T-130 sinking line.

I only wanted to fillet 17, but kept fishing until I released my double limit on consecutive casts.

I got into flounder that way one December day at Cedar Bayou, the pass between Matagorda and San Jose islands.  Released 40 small ones on consecutive casts, stinger hook fly that glided on the sand bottom.  Was fished out by the cold and anticipating the cold 15-mi ride back to the boat ramp.

Fished the Kansas River again Sunday. Was over a foot lower than last week, which it was already low. I'm thinking a lot of the fish probably headed down river to avoid getting trapped, I was plagued by turtles and gar all day. I started trying to catch bait at an inflow, caught 2 wipers and kept 1 for cutbait that swallowed the hook and died from the fight.

I don't know how many good bites and runs I had that I thought were catfish until I finally realized they were gar, but it was a lot. Finally hooked a few, lost most of them, but I did get a gar double, it was better than nothing I guess.

I've been plagued by rough fish myself lately. Been using shad alot targeting cats..even caught 3 one morning. Outside of that I've caught a big stinky drum and I bet over a dozen gar.

You should try bottom-bouncing a 10-lb gaspergou on a fly rod.

Or sight-fish a 30" longnose gar.

Just watching the 10' surface lunge to take your cats whisker is a rush - hooked up, their aerials are tarpon-like.

jjTGciv.jpg

Way Better than nothing.

Hooked up a samsonite-size black buffalo on a Tonka Queen cane rod and 1917 Hardy St. George.  Never expected to land it, and was happy when it came unhooked, but it porpoised continuously for two trips into the backing.  It was a 10-min Ride.

Well, a decade or so ago I was fishing jerkbaits off a bluff near the Bull Shoals dam.

The water was gin clear and bout 300' deep! We were targeting walleye that had pinned

shad up against the rock walls. We were fishing late on a moonless night, "country dark".

I was throwing a Lucky Craft Pointer 128, dreaming about a new World Record! And then

it hit...

My gear was a Lamiglas Skeet Reese SR705R, Shimano Calcutta and #15 Yo-Zuri Hybrid.

The rig was completely maxed out and I knew this was the one!  I could hardly move the fish

and it seemed like an eternity fighting the monster in the dark. As I got the fish up a little,

my guide Tim "Hotdawg" Curtis was scanning the water with a floodlight when he screamed

"S**T", it's a gar. In the clear water the fish was still 15'-20' deep and 20 yards out. As the fish

came closer, we knew we needed a bigger boat.

I said just cut it off, but Hotdawg would have none of that, he was determined to save

the lure. This fish seemed as long as the boat so the only thing we could do was attempt

to snare the snout in the net. It was pure comedy!

We eventually retrieved the Pointer and the fish swam free. Don't know what it actually

weighed, but something like 75-100 lbs is a guess. She was HUGE!  So, I have had some

fun with trash fish, but I still don't target them, ever.
