Super User A-Jay Posted May 16, 2020 Super User Posted May 16, 2020 Old Tooth Face swallowed my jerkbait today. This was One Mean Pike ~ And Really Thick across the back. A-Jay 8 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 16, 2020 Super User Posted May 16, 2020 Do near catches count? Caught two pike today but didn't get this one in the boat - second one hooked. Third one, second boated, went 2.23#...I think this one was bigger. He stole my Rattlin' Rap 08 - Bluegill 2 1 Quote
M Bruns Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Took the Nucanoe out to do some panfishing. I was using my 5' ultralight, 6 lb test, and a small Aberdeen hook with a chunk of worm. Saw this guy tailing in the shallows so I instinctively dropped the bait in front of him. That was a mistake! He ended up dragging me around for 35 minutes and gave my drag a workout. Weighed 16 pounds. My arm wasn't long enough to get a full picture of him! 8 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 16, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 16, 2020 Got some toothy ones this weekend. A sauger on a jig flipping a dock. Then a super dark saugeye on a Swimming Shiner off a mud point actually trying for them, not quite a keeper. Finally found one over 18" in 2' of water on a rocky point on the swimming shiner, just nipped at it ? 8 Quote

Way north bass guy Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Our local ramps finally opened this morning,So I took the kid out for a pike fish. The water is still pretty cold, and no real monsters today, but we still got a 1/2 dozen pike and a bunch of big bass. Biggest pike was about 32” and biggest bass was about 4lbs or so. 6 Quote
YoTone Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Water is warming up and so is the snake bite. I was swinging the hammer and driving my spro spit shad hooks home. Caught 2 and missed about the same in a few hours. Very fun when the bass weren't biting. 7 Quote

galyonj Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Caught some catfish bait by accident. Treble hook dug into its back, and dragging it through the water back to me I thought I'd hooked another of the innumerable pieces of trash under the water where I was fishing. Anyway, I'm sure it was as surprised to see me as I was to see it. 5 Quote
Way north bass guy Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Took the kid back out for a pike fish on Georgian Bay this afternoon. Luckily we were on the calm side of the bay today, cause it was pretty breezy. In 3 hours we managed 6 pike up to about 32” long, about 15 huge smallmouth up to 5lbs and a nice rainbow. The kid lost another rainbow about 6lbs or so that jumped like a rocket right beside the boat. You never know what your gonna catch on “the bay”. 9 Quote
Finessegenics Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Got a bunch of different species shore fishing this afternoon. This guy came on the first cast on a ned rig. Caught a smallie too but strict catch and quick release since the season is still closed. 5 Quote

Where I fish is a drop off, 30’ out could be 10-15’ deep I typically sight fish for them in shallow water so I’m typically 12”-18” down from the bobber. Like Crappie, they look up so I’d side with being higher in the water column as opposed to being too deep. The exciting way to catch them in shallow water is by using a fly rod. Small hopper (foam flying ant, damselfly, grasshopper pattern, stimulator) with a trailer tied 12” from the shank of the hopper pattern’ s hook with a size 18 prince nymph, damselfly nymph, or copper John. When you twitch the floating hopper they come up and inspect If they don’t strike top water, they settle on the trailing fly and now your stimulator is a strike indicator. It’s perfect for summers when larger terrestrials are prolific Now when I’m kayaking for panfish and I can locate schools of them in deeper water off drop offs and around brush piles especially ...... I like using a drop shot with a 2’ leader, light weight, loop knot with a bright colored 1/16 oz jig with a 1” Gulp Minnow or a bright chartreuse (Dirty water) or earthworm colored (clear water) 2” Gulp Floating Worm (wacky style). I tend to inadvertently catch a lot of catfish too with that set up which is always a bonus. 1 Quote
Pkfish49 Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 I managed to escape the city for another fishing trip. The next three days are going to be nice, but today was pretty awful. I fished in the wind and steady rain. The lake was weird today and the fish weren’t following their normal patterns. I was able to land this Bluegill and Pumpkinseed Sunfish before calling It a day. 2 Quote
Ogandrews Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Great weekend on lake vermilion in northern mn. The musky was 47” and I caught it while walleye fishing with an 8lbs test leader. 20 min fight but the fish swam off strong. The Bigger walleye I didn’t measure correctly in that pic it was actually 26.5, got into a great shallow water bite snap jigging small swimbaits at dusk. Fish were absolutely hammering the baits, not like what most people think of as walleye fishing. Got at least 20 fish around the size of the first one but the only bigger fish was the 26.5, no real giants. 4 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 27, 2020 Super User Posted May 27, 2020 1/32oz trout magnet saved my day, A couple good size bluegill and a 2lb bass on Daiwa Presso 5’6 and my old trusty and rusty Sahara 750FB. 3 Quote
Ogandrews Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Got into a decent pike and largemouth bite today. Pike were biting either a trap burned around a deep weed edge or a 7-8” swimbait fished right through the weeds. The big pike have been evading me all year, had 2 fish in the 40” class follow my swimbait up to the boat and had another in that class miss the bait as I was pulling it out. Was still a lot of fun fishing for them, at this water temp pike fight so crazy it’s impossible not to have fun hooking into them. picture of me is longarming it hard, was a low 30’s” fish but i guess my buddy tried to make it look bigger 10 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 28, 2020 Super User Posted May 28, 2020 That's a solid pike, probably 8-10 lbs. It's really hard NOT to long arm a pike when getting a grip 'n grin shot. Getting a length and girth really helps describe the size to other pike fisherman. I fish for pike quite a bit (there's some good places near me) and those are great catches. I think of that class like I do a 4 lb. smallie. Not exactly trophies, but really good fish. 1 Quote
Dorado Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Last night catfishing before taking a hiatus due to the stupid hot weather coming up in AZ. Little urban pond fishing with my gf 10 Quote

Anywhere else and I would be really pumped to catch fish like this but in the couple of pike fisheries I regularly fish these are every day fish. I’m pretty blessed to be able to have such quality waters around where I live, and also have them be pretty unknown by locals. The big pike here act a lot like muskies, follow baits a lot, will regularly hit right next to the boat, and only feed during certain windows during the day. To be able to see 40” class fish almost every time I fish these places at the right time of year is really special in the US. My profile pic is a pike out of this same lake and it was a 44.5 incher that was super fat in October, had to be pushing that 20lbs mark. 2 Quote

Pkfish49 Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 It was hard work to get the spot where I caught this, but well worth it. In my favorite lake, lots of Pickerel are deep in the Lily Pads, very close to shore. On my way there, I had to row myself out of trouble a few times when the boat got stuck because it was so shallow. I caught this around ten feet from shore, where the water wasn't more than three feet deep. I threw a 4 inch green Senko and reeled in very slowly. The fish is in my freezer now. 5 Quote

There was a lady living near lake Toho when I went there that required we bring her 2 of those for dinner when we went fishing! 1 Quote
