NittyGrittyBoy Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Man I wish we had stripers/hybrids around me. They don't do well in a muddy river... Quote

They do tend to be picky about what they eat, until they decide to eat. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 5, 2018 Global Moderator Posted December 5, 2018 Too cold to fool with launching a boat after work, got one bank fishing. Much better than watching espn from 4:30-6 3 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted December 8, 2018 Super User Posted December 8, 2018 Went out for catfish/crappies drifting for a few hours since my wife demanded me some catfish for next weekend-get together. The water is so muddy from the rain we got a few days back and a lot of floating debris. I managed to catch two good size catfish 4-5 lbs with my special bacon recipe but NADA for crappies. 8 Quote

RealtreeByGod Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 I was wrong about that drum I posted several pages ago. It wasn't the first one I caught on a lipless. Just remembered I caught this little guy like 3 years ago. 3 Quote

I've even caught walleye on them bottom fishing them live for flathead. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 6, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 6, 2019 My first fish of the year was an "other" fish. Also took a minute to try to catch a couple of these guys just to see if I could. 5 Quote

wet_dream Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 I usually try to go on a few Tog headboat trips in the winter time to scratch the fishing itch. Managed to catch a couple keepers last time out. It has been a pretty picky bite this season. I’ve seen reports of lots of double digit fish but the numbers seem to be trending down this season. Hopefully that’s just due to the funky weather we’ve had this winter. 6 Quote

On my last guide trip, my client caught a channel cat on a Strike King KVD 300 jerkbait that was only about twice as long as the jerkbait. They're way more predatory than most people think. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 13, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 13, 2019 Caught a catfish with a hair jig that I tied this week. I did have a live shad on the back of it though! Haha. We got several other cats just like that bobber fishing the shad around Marina's . The water was 20+ ft deep and the catfish were biting 4-5 ft under the surface 6 Quote

I've caught them on crankbaits before, but this was the first jerk-style bait I've caught one on. It was a lot of fun actually. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 13, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 13, 2019 Had a couple hours free this morning, decided to do some drywall demolition down at my family’s lake house (hopefully my forever home). Took some casts off the dock and got 4 crappie! Even got one with a bobber, which is sometimes impossible for me. I had to try it because after I got the first 3 I just kept losing hooks in brush 8 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 20, 2019 Super User Posted January 20, 2019 Finally somewhat success, I know now why some of you like fishing for crappies. Today decided to try for crappies again after a month long of laying down crappie’s pole. I brought just one lure with me, roadrunner 1/8oz with baby shad, since I don’t plan to stay very long. A frist few cast I tried fan casting, reel fast and fish between water column. Until I tried to slow down and hug the bottom by letting the roadrunner sink to bottom every few cranks. Got a small tab, didn’t even think I got a fish until started reeling in. Finally a 12” crappie on the line. I tried to duplicate how I caught the first one and cast to same area. It is a little difficult since my reel is 7.2 gear ratio but I made it. I caught total 5-6 crappies with in 10 mins until the last one got my #10lb braid between rock and broke off (of course he felt bigger than other not sure if it was bass or crappie). Now what do I do fish for bass or crappies, very difficult decision to make. 13 Quote

Never hurts to have them as a backup in case the bass bite is slow, or you just feel like doing something different for a change. Nice job. 1 Quote
