Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 23, 2023 Global Moderator Posted August 23, 2023 I paddled, pedaled, and drug my kayak a couple miles against the river current to check out a new spot Saturday. I didn't have very good bait and I couldn't find any carp to shoot like I'd hoped. Had 1 big bite on one of the only bigger bluegills I had and the hook turned back into the bluegill. Right as I started to pack up, a rod that I'd baited with a chunk of drum I caught on a nightcrawler just folded and started peeling line. I love this kind of fishing and really need to do it more. Super User T-Billy Posted August 26, 2023 Super User Posted August 26, 2023 So... The wife and I had an enjoyable morning. ? Didn't have enough room to fit all the pics, but we caught 6 between 33" and 37", a 29" , and the 46" kicker in the bottom photo, plus we each lost a mid 30's at boatside. All in just over four hours!!! Only a couple lazy followers. They were chewin!!! 12 Quote

Super User T-Billy Posted August 26, 2023 Super User Posted August 26, 2023 We came close to doubling up, and it was with the mid 30's fish we both lost. She had one hit on the 8 just as I had made a cast. As I was burning my bait back in so I could man the net, hers came off. So, I burned mine back in and got hammered in the first turn of the 8 by a different fish. Similar size, but different color. It came unbuttoned too. How sweet would that have been if we coulda put them both in the net? Wouldn't have been a lot of fun dealing with the aftermath though!!! Those 30 something's are the worst to deal with. High strung and just big and strong enough to hurt ya. 1 Quote
Woody B Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 Since I started back fishing a couple years ago I've only targeted Bass. I've caught a bunch of other species though, including some fairly big Cats. I can't claim to be a good Catfisher since I catch them by accident but I still think it's an accomplishment to get a big cat in the boat with bass tackle.  My first "other species" today was a smallish Crappie. I was getting nibbles on the trailer on my bladed jig. I removed the trailer and stuck a #6 treble on it for a trailer hook. I wanted to find out what was nibbling. After the Crappie I removed the trailer hook and went with a bigger trailer. (Armor Shad, instead of Manns Classic spinnerbait trailer) I caught the big cat, as well as 6 of my 7 Bass on the Seibert bladed jig with the armor shad trailer. The Cat was a Flathead, 41 1/2 inches long weighing 37.03 pounds.  Big blue cats fight like heck for a minute or so then give up. Flatheads, at least the ones I've caught don't give up.  I hooked it in ~15 feet of water under the powerline in the last picture. I took the picture with no zoom from my spot locked position where I finally got it in the boat. I'm guessing I followed/chased it 1/2 mile. Both the cat and myself were tired with I finally got it in the boat. I've got a friend who targets Cats. His biggest this year is 11 pounds. His PB is 17 pounds. I told him he needs to start bass fishing.    11 Quote

Super User T-Billy Posted September 2, 2023 Super User Posted September 2, 2023 Managed three small ski's today, and the wife and I each lost a mid 30's. 36" below. Didn't bother with pics of the two smaller fish. They were both MAYBE 30", I just unhooked 'em boatside and sent 'em on their way. Pic below of why I hate fishing weekends. These vultures watched me catch two, and as soon as I drifted a little over a cast length off the spot, they swooped in. They didn't catch squat. They saw exactly what I was doing, but are too dumb to immitate it. Lol. Â 10 1 Quote

MeatHead1313 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Hadn't been out on my kayak since the start of June due to the heat we've had this summer, but bit the bullet today in pursuit of redfish and flounder. No luck on the flounder, but did find a 21 and 19.5 inch red to bring home for dinner. Had an insane amount of hookups on alligator gar as well. 11 Quote

Super User T-Billy Posted September 11, 2023 Super User Posted September 11, 2023 It dawned on me yesterday, that it was this week last year that I started catching muskie on my favorite shallow point while night bass fishing. So... I got there about an hour before daylight to check it out. There were lots of fish porpoising both shallow and just off the break. I fished the whole point with a bucktail with nary a follow, made the switch to an 8" Jointed Believer and put two in the boat in about 15min. 33" and 31". This spot should continue to hold fish until turnover, so I left to do a little scouting for next week. First couple spots didn't pan out, but I found a couple more later in the morning with deep milfoil and coontail. Both are short, deep cuts off the main lake basin where they can quickly move shallow to deep. Again, both of these spots should be consistent producers until turnover, at which point it'll become all about the Bama Rig. I'm starting to get a fall milk run figgered out for these critters. 31" and 36" No bigs but we have a pretty major cool off forcast, starting tomorrow. The bigger fish should start moving up in the next couple weeks. Fingers crossed for my most epic fall of fishing yet!!!  16 Quote

Not cheap, but worth every penny. https://wbmuskyshop.com/products/rs-nets-muskie-mag-net-shipping-included  It was a toss up between the Muskie Mag and the Clam Colossus. https://www.muskyshop.com/products/nets-clam-colossus-large-musky I went with the RS because it's handmade here in OH, and they're a sponsor of my guide buddy. I don't think you can go wrong with either net. Maina swears by the Colossus. Big boatside livewells that make dealing with those big slimers SOO... much easier than a smaller hoop net. Great for taking care of the fish too. They get a chance to chill out and recover while setting up the phone for a quick pic. They're only out of the water maybe 30sec. 3 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted September 16, 2023 Super User Posted September 16, 2023 I wouldn't normally bother with taking a pic of a 28", but after cranking for nearly 9hrs for THIS bite... oh it's getting it's picture taken, AND posted!!! LOL. Bout a half hour later I caught this 36". Meanest muskie I've ever caught. They'll usually shake their head to pull away from you when your trying to slip your fingers under their gill plate to pick 'em up. This fish was actually snapping at my hand while I was trying to get a handle on her. Took her 5 or 6 tries, but she got me. She's so mean, I named her Marci, after my sister. ? 12 4 Quote
